How soon can we get married?

You need to have at least one month’s notice to meet the legal requirement.

What are the legal things we need to know when planning a wedding?

You need at least one month's notice before the actual wedding ceremony.  Australian law requires that you complete, sign and lodge the Notice of Intended Marriage document at least one month before the wedding ceremony.

To complete this form you need to provide sufficient identification i.e. original birth certificate, current passport. This process depends on your individual situation; your celebrant will advise you of the legal process.

Getting married in Australia you need to be 18 years+.  If either party has been married before you will need to provide your Divorce Certificate, Annulment Certificate or Death Certificate.

For the Ceremony

You need to have 2 witnesses 18 years old +. Witnesses can be family or friends.

How long is a wedding ceremony?

This depends on what you want in your marriage ceremony. Ceremonies can be as short as 10-15 minutes or up to 45 minutes. It  depend on what you‘d like to include in you ceremony i.e. if you want to include readings, music and other personal elements in your ceremony.

It’s important to include things in your ceremony that make it just right for you.

Who can be involved in the ceremony?

You get to choose who you’d like to include in your ceremony. It depends on what you want for your perfect day. There are many ways children, families and significant others can be a part of a ceremony.

What about music in our ceremony?

Music is an awesome way to personalise your ceremony.

Having your favourite music on your wedding day can add to the personal significance of the ceremony for you. Some ideas include adding music from when you first met, or something that makes you laugh together or reminds you of your partner when you hear it.
