Expert Advice

As a wedding professional, Millgrove Photography offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.

can you cancel your wedding photographer?

For example, if the wedding was cancelled or postponed, could you cancel?

It's usually possible to cancel the photographer, although as has been mentioned it will depend on the contract you have in place with them.

It's always a good idea to ask what their cancellation/refund policy is - some have a strict no-cancellation policy, others have staged payments and some won't offer any refund at all depending on how far out the wedding is.

Wedding do need to be cancelled or postponed from time to time - we've had it happen for various reasons from the very sad to the very happy (like a new little one deciding to book their arrival date for the same day as the wedding! :)

If the question really is "can I get my deposit back if I cancel", it really will depend on your agreement with the photographer and their policy.

I'm looking for a photographer that can fit into my small budget of 5,000 in melbourne?

My venue is in the yarra valley, I like candid images

Hi there,

Congratulations on your wedding news and on picking a venue in the beautiful Yarra Valley.

As well as the other great responses here, you may want to consider whether the photographer is accredited by the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography), which ensures they are indeed a professional and have covered things like insurance, offer a contract, etc.

Also, depending where in the Yarra Valley you're getting married, it would be worth talking to some photographers who are based in that area and who know the venues well.

Also, checking out reviews on Easy Weddings and Facebook will give you a great idea of past clients' experience.

All the best!

Cheers,

if a photographer is with me for 8 hours, when do they get a lunch break?

when is the best time to give them a meal?

Hi there,

As others have mentioned, the short answer to this is usually - "what lunch break"? :-)

We're usually on the go from when we get to the prep locations through until you guys sit down for some entree, at which time it's a good time to take a short break for something to eat. Speaking personally, I also have a stash of snack foods and lots of water in the car, so I can keep the energy up through the day.

And, as Niki mentioned, thanks for the thought!

Cheers,

Jon

Are there any good photography spots near daylesford/woodend or glenlyon, vic?

Can you please recommend some?

Absolutely :) down by the lake in Daylesford there are lots of great spots, I've shot a few weddings there at venues like the Lake House and churches in Daylesford. There are also lots of very pretty B&B's around, which can make for great pre-wedding shots or wet-weather locations to escape to - depending on where you're getting married, it might be worth looking into those as well, as many provide really great photography locations as well as a good spot for your preparations.

Cheers!

What are the benefits of having an engagement session with a photographer?

I noticed a lot have it as an added inclusion in some packages

It can serve a lot of purposes, including all of those mentioned in other answers.

One other thing I'd like to mention is regarding the timing of the shoot. I've done lots of "engagement shoots", where couples are looking to test the waters and see how we get on, ask questions, and check out the results before they make their decision.

But I've also often done "pre-wedding" shoots with couples who have already booked with me, and these we sometimes do just a few weeks before the wedding. They are a great way to reconfirm everything we've discussed previously, as well as to talk about poses, locations, options for wet weather, what the venue looks like at that time of year (some, like wineries, can look VERY different depending on the time of the year).

So it's worth considering an engagement shoot if you're still choosing your wedding snapper, or a pre-wedding shoot closer to the date - both can be very helpful to clients as well as photographers.

Thanks for the great question! :)
