Loren Newbery and David Tidy don’t love the limelight, so were keen to keep their beach wedding as fuss-free as possible.
“Loren and I don’t enjoy being the centre of attention, so we were excited for a low-key wedding with a connection with the environment and the outdoors, which we both love,” David, 34, explains.
The Melbourne pair, who knew each other for years before reconnecting, decided on a ceremony at their local beach in Aspendale before a cocktail reception at their home.
“The wedding was perfect. The ceremony was relaxed, with our guests and wedding party barefoot,” David says.
“After the ceremony, everyone walked back to our house for the reception, where a local music duo – Rebecca and Nathan – set the garden party mood with Spanish-influenced covers. Local wine and beer was flowing, and the vegan menu was incredible – we still get comments about this from guests six months later!”
David and Loren, 28, say their decision to hold a backyard reception didn’t come without challenges (renting extra toilets, glasses and seats and facing the big clean-up afterwards) but it was worth the effort for the seriously personalised touch.
“Our wedding was the perfect representation of Loren and I,” David says.
“We were married in a beautiful place that we will visit many times a year for the rest of our lives. It was a communal effort, with family scouring op-shops for decorative cake plates and helping to assemble marquees.”

Vistaprint took charge of the couple’s simple but beautiful invitations.
A delicate flower crown was the perfect accessory for bohemian bride Loren.
Even the couple’s Rhodesian ridgeback got into the spirit, suiting up to serve as one of David’s groomsmen.
The couple’s first date was a comedy show. “The show wasn’t particularly funny, but the date was lots of fun anyway and we made plans for our second date that night. We saw more comedy for our second date – Ronny Chieng, and I think at that point we both realised we had something special,” David says.
David proposed while the pair were holidaying in Dubrovnik, Croatia. “I gave her a simple silver band in place of the real ring which was being made back in Melbourne. Loren loves her bespoke sapphire ring which she says reminds her of the Adriatic where we got engaged,” David says.
The couple sealed their love with timeless rings from Michael Hill.
Wedding Hire Melbourne helped take some of the stress out of styling the backyard reception.
