Should I hire a band or a DJ?

That's a question best answered by considering the atmosphere you're going for.
May Rocket provides Acoustic duo, Band, and DJ services, so we get to see the interaction from all sides.

A good live band has a lot more interaction with the audience. when someone is live on the mic all the time, calling out the little things someone might be doing, maybee a dance move that nobody else noticed and can get in on, or encouraging the shy looking couple out of the dark corners is natural, whereas it may come across a little cheesy from the same song being played by a DJ who is in most situations best keeping off the mic as much as possible other than for MC duties. A live band can mix and mashup songs on the fly, creating interresting blends of lyrics and instrumental, or perform totally different versions, can slowdance your favourite rock hit, or jazz up your aisle walk for everyone to dance to at the reception

A DJ on the other hand can play the songs exactly as you and your guests know them. While you can certainly mix and mashup songs as a DJ, the options are a little more limited as everything your doing has to be pre recorded at some stage... you can lay down the vocal of one song over the instrumental of another, but the individual vocal only or instrumental only layers needs to be pre-prepared and available to use, or, you settle for different types of blends.... its not as natural as a band might be able to create, but not better or worse either, just different, perhaps a little more rigid... one certain advantage is requests are simple, the DJ doesnt need the band to know the song to be able to play it, so the number of availble tunes is virtually unlimited..

Both can transition from light music into party hits, both can rock a dance floor, a band I think is probably more memorable, a band will require set breaks to refresh, and theres more setup and packup time you need to allow for if you're on time restrictions with the venue.

Both options have great merrit, and choosing one over the other is really a matter of personal prefference, but why settle for one or the other, when you could have both in a progressive package?

What exactly does an MC do?

At the core, your MC is the control center for the evening, they will handle your public service announcements and introductions, and keep guests informed as to what is happening throughout the evening to make sure everyone is aware, organised and on schedule.... on the surface this role is simple, and is often handled by a close friend or family member, if not the DJ or band, but it does come with alot of organising and responsibility... your MC will play a major role in setting the tone of the evening, weather it be light hearted, jovial, fun, formal, sincere or a combination. your funniest mate or uncle might sound like fantastic idea (and they very often are), but just make sure they are up to the organisational requirements for a smooth evening, as they will need to liase very closeley with the DJ, band or entertainment, with the venue and caterers, photographer and everyone else involved, aswell as the bridal party and guests.
