Are you terrified of writing your groom wedding speech? Fret not, we’ve got you covered with this lovely, touching and basic free wedding toast template, grooms edition.

Feel free to use this template in its entirety, or just tweak it to suit your own situation.

The groom’s speech is the centre of the reception. It can be hard to pin down the vibe, do you want to go for something funny, heartfelt, romantic? There are so many options to go for, but there is always a cadence to the speech – so regardless of the words, a way that it’s delivered and the make-up of a great speech.

A great piece of advice comes from a Reddit user: “[Say] Whatever you want to say. Don’t worry about what you should say. It’s your wedding, say things because you want to, not because you think you should.”

The words in <brackets> offer you the opportunity to personalise the speech or encourage you to share personal anecdotes.

I want to thank each of you for sharing this special day with my partner. Gee, I like the sound of that. I think I’ll say it again – with my partner and myself.

There so many other things you could be doing today, so we’re glad you chose to spend it with us on this most special of days.

Thank you – on behalf of me – and my partner!

You’ve heard the saying that it takes a village to raise a child but, as I’ve discovered over the past <insert timeframe here> months, it also takes a bit of a village to make a wedding happen.

And I’m not just talking about the wedding day itself, but about everything that went into getting us here. I’m talking about all the events and people who were <insert your name> and <partners name> as our relationship began and grew – and found us standing here, in front of you as a married couple. Wow, I really do like the sound of that!

So, I ask you to indulge me as I thank some people who have made all of this possible. I’ll do my best to keep it brief… kind of!

One of the things I realized as our wedding day got closer, is that, not only will I leave here today with a new spouse, I’ll leave here today with a whole new family, too. And that’s a wonderful, wonderful thing.

To my partners family, <instead of saying “my partners family”, a better option is to name their parents, siblings and other important family members>, thank you for welcoming me into your family. I promise that I will do everything in my power to be the kind of husband you’ve always wanted for <insert your spouses name in here>.

Mum and Dad, what can I say but Thank You? Without the two of you, I couldn’t have been standing here as the man I am today – and I certainly would be as happy as I am today had it not been for your many years of love and support and advice and, the older I grow, friendship.

Beyond bringing me into this world, you’ve moulded me into the person I am today.

It sounds cliched, but it’s absolutely true. You taught me to be the kind of man who could win the heart of such a good and wonderful woman. I am proud to be your son and I love you more than these three words can possibly express.

There are so many other people who have meant so much to <partners nameand me. Some of them were in our lives before we met each others and some we’ve met along the way, as a couple.

<You could mention some of them here or just say “There are so many of you to thank that we’d be here all night if I did, but suffice it to say that each of you will always be very, very special of ‘us’. Thank you.>.

There are also several people who stood with us today as we took our vows, and I want to ensure you all know them.

<Here, introduce each of the groomsmen and the ring bearer, and the bridesmaids if necessary>.

And the best man, of course, is <name of best man>. I chose <name of best man> to be my best man because… <Tell your guests why you chose him to be your best man and what he means to you. This is where you can share an entertaining story about the best man, if you have one you can share.>

I have one last person to thank, and that is my beautiful spouse <name>.  I really like the sound of that!

<Be sure to look at your new spouse when you are delivering this portion of your speech. Don’t be scared. Enjoy it.>

I feel so blessed and so privileged that you agreed to marry me.

<Here you can share a special story about your partner or tell them in front of everyone all the things you love about them.>

You have already changed my life in so many wonderful ways and I know that it’s just going to get better from here. I love you more than words can express and I look forward to spending the rest of my life with you. So, thank you for that.

Other things to consider

Try not to stress yourself out too much about this. As another Reddit user said: “There is no set rule or list for things you have to do, people aren’t going to be outraged if you do things in the wrong order, it isn’t that formal.”

FAQs for the grooms speech

What should a groom say in his speech?

A groom’s speech should thank the guests for coming, acknowledge both families, express heartfelt gratitude to the bridal party and suppliers, and, most importantly, say something meaningful and loving about their new spouse. Personal stories, humor, and genuine emotion are always a winning combination.

How to stick to a 3-minute wedding speech?

  • Minute 1: Thank guests, acknowledge family and in-laws, and give a quick nod to the wedding team.

  • Minute 2: Share a short, heartfelt story or memory about your partner.

  • Minute 3: Express your love and excitement for the future, then finish with a toast.

What should the groom say?

It should be simple: thank the guests, acknowledge both families, a warm thanks to the bridal party and the suppliers, and then a share of love for their partner. Some humour and a lot of sentiment.

What is a good short speech for a wedding couple?

Keep it simple, three to four lines. That you’re both overwhelmed with love and gratitude for one another and all the special people in your lives.

How does the groom end his speech?

Wrap up with a sincere toast: “To love, to laughter, and to a lifetime with the person who makes every day better. Cheers!”

What goes first in a wedding speech?

Start by welcoming guests and thanking them for being part of the day. Then acknowledge both families and the bridal party.

How long should a wedding speech be for a groom?

Ideally, 3–5 minutes. Long enough to say something meaningful, short enough to keep everyone engaged and avoid rambling.
