Wedding speeches, who gives a speech and should there be a format as to not repeat?

Struggling to know who should be giving a speech and what each speech should contain so we are not all repeating each other. ??

Radio Active Mobile Disco

There are no specific rules about who can get involved in the speeches, but traditionally it's the fathers of the bride and groom, the best man and then the groom. However I've done plenty of weddings where others may also like to say something, such as mother of the bride and groom, maid of honour and also other members of the bridal party.

It's not a bad idea to get together beforehand to discuss what might be said by various parties so that they're not overlapping too, just keep it secret from the bride and groom so that any surprises are not spoilt.

It's also recommended to keep speeches short and to the point. Throw in a joke or two and keep it light. Guests quickly get bored if speeches ramble on too much about irrelevant things, and bring down the mood of the party. Long speeches will also interfere with the timing as they may hold up the kitchen and other formalities that need to be done.

is it wrong to play sad songs at weddings? or songs about break ups

some of my favourite songs are about break ups!

Radio Active Mobile Disco

Like others have mentioned, it's probably not a good idea to bring down the mood too much, remember it's a happy occasion and you want people to have fun and be merry. However, I can think of some sad songs that are actually quite appropriate too:

You've Lost That Lovin Feeling, You Don't Treat Me No Good No More, Careless Whisper, I Will Survive, Nothing Compares To You, I Will Always Love You, Every Breath You Take... etc

If you listen to the lyrics, they are about loss and breaking up, but I've never had any complaints!

how do i start the dancing at my wedding if im not having a first dance?

Radio Active Mobile Disco

How about we kick it off with something upbeat that everyone will enjoy? I personally like Celebration by Cool & Gang, always a good floor filler!

What is the best way to create playlists for our reception?

Radio Active Mobile Disco

Hi Karen,

You should definitely ask your DJ to include some of your favourite songs to help personalise the music depending on your likes. Choose your entrance song, bridal waltz, father/daughter dance and your farewell songs. Throw in some of your partners favourites and maybe even get your guests to suggest a song on the wedding invitation/reply. You should also mention to your DJ any song that you definitely don't want too! But don't be too bossy, give your DJ a bit of freedom to choose songs that suit the demographics and allow the guests to make requests during the night. That way everyone gets to have a great time!

What are some songs that will get the dance floor moving?

I'm putting together my wedding playlist and wondered if you had some suggestions for songs that will get everybody up and dancing?

Radio Active Mobile Disco

Hey Lucy,

You can't go past some of the 70's, 80's and 90's classics that people love to get down to. Artists like Michael Jackson, Whitney, Bee Gees, Bon Jovi, Rick Springfield, and Backstreet Boys (just to name a few!) have great songs that people love to let loose to. Consider organising a playlist which incorporates top 40 tracks as well as old favourites. That way your DJ can cater for all ages and offer a variety of music throughout the night. Stick with popular songs that everyone knows rather than obscure ones that may only appeal to a select few. You should also allow your DJ abit of freedom rather sticking to rigid selection. A good DJ will mix it up so that everyone will enjoy the evening.

Will a wedding band or DJ act as an MC?

Just wondering whether it's common for wedding DJs to also act as an MC?

Radio Active Mobile Disco

You should always ask, because a lot of DJ companies want to charge extra for the MC service. Look for one that includes it and has experience. I've done many weddings where the couple have decided to use a family member or friend to do the MC duties and have actually not done a great job. Poor microphone technique, flat introductions and announcements, not engaging the crowd etc. Of course there are those that do a fantastic job too, but you can't go past either a DJ/MC or a dedicated MC for the job.

How important is experience when booking a wedding band/DJ?

Radio Active Mobile Disco

Experience is a must, so make sure you check out the DJ by either meeting them in person beforehand or seeking referals and testimonials from previous work they have done. Check out their social media pages like Facebook for real client feedback. An experienced DJ will show a good track record, have worked at many different venues, and be able to offer a flexible music package to cater for everyone.
