Expert Advice
As a wedding professional, felicitations offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.
Get Expert AdviceIs there a polite way to execute a rolling plus one list?
Or does telling a guest their plus one is dependent on other RSVPs create more awkwardness than it solves? How do planners usually advise couples handle this dilemma?
felicitations
Yes, absolutely! A rolling plus-one list is quite common, especially when working within venue capacity or budget constraints.
The most polite approach is to only invite named guests on your initial invitations and avoid mentioning plus-ones unless they're included. Once your RSVP deadline passes and you have a clearer idea of numbers, you can then reach out to additional guests individually and warmly extend an invitation to bring a guest.
Something along the lines of:
"We've had a few RSVP changes and would now love for you to bring a guest if you'd like. Please let us know if there's someone you'd like to join you!"
The key is not to imply that anyone is a "second choice." Instead, frame it as additional space becoming available as plans are finalised. Most guests are very understanding, and those who receive a later plus-one invitation are usually delighted to have the option.
One thing to avoid is sending invitations that say "plus one may become available later," as this can create confusion and make guests feel uncertain about their invitation status.
Wishing you all the best with your planning!
Beyond just an early Save the Date, what are the most meaningful ways we can support our guests?
We are planning a destination wedding and want to make the experience as seamless and stress-free as possible for them. So that it makes attending an international wedding feel like a holiday rather than a chore.

Beyond Save the Dates, the most meaningful guest experience comes down to clarity, ease, and feeling considered throughout the process.
A really impactful step is sending a well-designed invitation suite that doesn’t just look beautiful, but actually answers most of your guests’ practical questions upfront - things like timing, location details, transport, dress code (in a clear, real-world way rather than overly vague wording), and accommodation options if relevant. The less guests have to chase you for answers, the more relaxed they’ll feel leading up to the day.
A wedding website can also do a lot of the heavy lifting in a thoughtful way. It’s a great place to centralise details like schedules, maps, FAQs, and RSVP tracking, but it also allows you to share more personal touches - your story, bridal party introductions, or even a note about what the day means to you. Guests tend to feel more connected when they understand the “why” behind the celebration, not just the logistics.
Another often overlooked touch is communication tone. Clear, warm, and consistent messaging across everything (invitations, emails, signage) helps guests feel guided rather than guessing. Even small things like providing parking instructions or estimated finish times can make a big difference.
On the day itself, thoughtful signage and wayfinding also quietly support guests more than people realise - it removes confusion so they can stay present and enjoy themselves.
Ultimately, the most meaningful support is anticipating the questions guests would otherwise feel awkward asking, and answering them before they need to.
do we include an rsvp slip or a qr code can we do a qr code
felicitations
Yes - you can absolutely do a QR code, and in many weddings it’s now the preferred option.
The best choice really comes down to your guest list and how comfortable your guests are with digital tools.
An RSVP slip (traditional reply card + return envelope) is still lovely for older guests or more formal weddings. It feels tactile and familiar, and removes any tech barrier. The downside is cost (printing + postage) and slower turnaround.
A QR code linking to a wedding website RSVP form is much more modern, cost-effective, and gives you cleaner data (meal choices, dietary requirements, plus-ones, etc. all collected in one place). It also makes it easier for you to track responses in real time. For most couples, this is now the most efficient option.
A really nice middle-ground is to include both:
That way you’re not excluding anyone, but you’re still encouraging the streamlined digital process.
If your wedding leans formal or has a lot of older guests, you might still include physical RSVP cards for a portion of your invites and use QR codes for the rest - there’s no rule saying it has to be all one or the other.
