Expert Advice

As a wedding professional, Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.

Is a large bouquet and a flowercrown too much?

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

It all relates to your gown , your venue and whether it suits you ...

we are doing alot of larger bouquets so keep in mind that you have to carry that and whether you then want to have

something else to worry about ...Its your day and we always give advice in our consultations....

How do I preserve my own bouquet?

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

My advice is to always use a professional _ we always recommend Bouquets Forever_ they do a great job- You must realize  though that it will not look exactly the same as the day.....

if i want to keep my bouquet, should i not do a bouquet toss?

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

We always supply a complimentary throwaway bouquet- so then you can keep your bouquet.

If you want to dry it _ get in done professionally then you can dsiplay it in a frame...

how far in advance should i book my florist?

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

We dont like to book more than a year ahead_ as we do many weddings each sesaon.

when you have your dress choesn and colours sorted for for bridesmaids you are then ready to talk flowers.

If you are looking at a specific florist my advice is to call them and ask them  their booking requirements...

can florists and decorators work together?

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

Yes we do work with decorators_ we have great working realtionships with other suppliers...

so it is great if your suppliers have worked together before_ you will always end up with a great result....

do florists deliver the wedding flowers on the day or the day before?

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

We deliver the bouquets and the buttonholes  on the morning of your wedding - they are in teh best condition

when they arrive to you and are delivered in water to you.Care dircetion are given to you at the time of delivery.

It certainly as proven over many years that it makes our clients feel more comfortable that they are there.

We then have the rest of the day to be able to work with time constraints  at ceremony locations and reception venues.

There are many hours involved in looking after flowers for a wedding.

if i know my dream flowers will give certain guests allergies, should i avoid them?

but i really want them :(

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

If its your dream flower and you are carrying them then it may not affect your guests at all.

This would be your decision to make....

would a miniature bouquet for a flower girl cost less than a bridesmaid bouquet?

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

Flowergirls are normally liitle so yes a flowergirls bouquet should be substantailly less than an adult Bridesmaids bouquet

What is the ballpark cost amount for wedding flowers for the bridal party?

Just a bridal bouquet plus a flower girl and two bridesmaids.

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

The price of flowers depends on the type of flowers ,the style of the bouquets ,the size of the bouquets,

My advice is always call a floral designer for them to be able to discuss with you in detail and then they can

give you some ball park figures- if you are then happy to meet, make an appointment so you can then get a detailed

written quotation .... you should be able to view extesive images of their work....

If I wanted to use some flowers from my Grandma's garden, would florists generally be ok with it?

Just say I wanted to incorporate some flowers I've picked myself with the flowers that the florist has provided.

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

We can certainly add some floral from the family members garden _ obviously for the sentiment- we have already done this several

times. We could advise of the quality and lasting of the flowers provided- the end result has to be of a standard that we are happy to put our name to

and look the best for the day.....

What flowers would you recommend for a native Australian bouquet?

I'm wanting to go with beautiful native Australian flowers for the bouquets and decorations whether that be centre pieces etc. I'm wanting bright - burgundy, yellow, orange, pinks and greens. What flowers and greenery would you suggest?

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

There should be a great selection_ the best time for natives is late winter early spring- a large variety do come from western australia

there are also south african natives like protea and leucadendron that many people think are australian natives that work very well with australian natives-

kangaroo paw ,waratah, flannel flower, pinwheel, silvan red ,protea- just to name a few.

Your professional wedding floral designer should be able to discuss varieties that are available with you.

If my favourite flowers won't be in season on my wedding date, is there anything I can do?

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

Flowers are seasonal _ that is what makes them special...sometimes we do get flowers at market that are imported so if the seasons

are opposite in Europe we can sometimes get them - depending on what they are ! there of course is an increased cost with imported flowers...

but your floral designer can offer you alternatives and can show you other options in fresh and artificial if required_ your floral designer should have an extensive folio to show you options....

How can I guarantee the type of flowers I want will be available?

I'm really set on having my favourite flowers as part of the floral arrangements on my big day. How can I be sure they'll be available?

Debbie O'Neill Freelance Designs

Flowers are seasonal _ so unless they are in season that cannot be guaranteed_ you need to speak to your florist

about all the options available
