Is it cheaper to buy a dress and get it altered or have it made from scratch?

I was surprised that the alterations quote for a dress I was looking at came in at $500... now I'm thinking is it better to have a dress made?

Hello, Alterations on a dress can be pricey depending on what needs to be done to the dress, they may need to basically take the dress completely apart and make it up again in your size and this is on top of buying the dress at ticket price. It would be best to get the dress made to the style you like, for your personality in the fabrics and colour you prefer to your personalised shape. You will fall in love with it more knowing that it is dress that is reflective of you.

Really depends on what is required to be done on your wedding gown and what the emellishment is on your gown. Majority of the

time brides tend to need their hemline to be shortened and adding of the train bustle/pickup.

Sometimes you can make your gown more Unique with alterations if your not having your gown made Bespoke.

At Paddington Weddings we create our own gowns and offer an alterations service so we see both sides of this. If you are lucky enough to be a fairly standard size, bust, waist and hips then off the rack with a few small adjustments are fine but often we find brides who have purchased a gown that needs to be taken apart and remade to fit, this can be very expensive and some issues are impossible to fix. Also if you are trying to change the actual design, remodelling or adding to the dress this can also be very expensive as it takes a lot of time.

Overall alterations are probably less expensive although It does depend upon both the design and the fabric you choose.  For example, a custom-designed wedding gown made from a synthetic fiber such as polyester would probably cost less than altering a silk dress you buy.  Of course if the silk gown is on sale, that, too, might change your decision.  In any case you should try on several types of gowns before you make your choice because the dress you desugb fior yourself or choose from a picture may not be the most flattering to you.

As getting your wedding dress made, it means that your dress is unique to you and every aspect of the dress is done by hand, including the laborious task of hand stitching, sewing appliques and embellishments. Therefore, the price will be higher than that of getting a mass produced wedding gown.

It all depends on the dress and the fit of the original dress.    Alterations on off the rack dresses can vary so much and if it is a lace or beaded dress I would not be surprised at $500.  If it is a crepe or chiffon gown then $500 could be on the high side. Depending on your sizing as well - for example if you are a size 14 bust but a size 16 bottom, the gown would have to be ordered as a 16 and then downsized in the bust...... However, if you are dealing with a good store and a good designer brand the store can sometimes order a mixed size, ie a 14 bodice and a 16 skirt, for a small fee, which may or may not work our better cost wise.

A gown can also sometimes be ordered as a custom length, which again will cost but for lace gowns this can be less than hemming alterations later.

I have altered gowns for $80/150, but on the other hand I have had gowns that require $500 - $600 dollars in alterations.

A custom made gown can eliminate these additional costs, as correct fit is done along the way.

My best advice is to discuss both options with a good dressmaker.  Make sure your dressmaker specialises in bridal gowns.  They should be able to provide you with quotes on both options.

I hope this helps :-)

Getting a dress altered can be more expensive and change the look of the dress. At Divine Bridal we make your dress from start to finish with no hidden cost. It also depends on what type of alterations you're getting though...

I wouldn't use the word cheaper, as they both have their uniquenesses depending on what a bride would consider paying for the absolute dress of her dreams and what it is worth to her emotionally.

Admittedly Bespoke wedding dresses can be relatively costly as it involves the process of creating a completely unique design from scratch for the bride.

However if a bride finds her dress she loves at a bridal boutique it will most likely need alterations, which can add hundreds of dollars to the dress budget. So the thing is to consider alteration costs when you begin the search for your dress.

All depends on the price sometimes brides end up paying more for alterations than the price of the gown
