I'm a 71-year-old bride-to-be, I don't want a white dress as I've been married before, what can I wear?

I don't want a bridesmaids dress either, and nothing too fancy. Any suggestions?

Being the bride you should stand out from your guests and feel elegant and confident in the right outfit. I would suggest having a beautiful dress or outfit designed just for you, depending on how formal or informal the occasion is, you might want to wear a a traditional colour or a colour you love. The most important thing is that you feel special on your day, everyone is different and I've helped many different mature women find the right thing for them. Some want an understated bridal gown or beautiful evening style gown in their favorite colour, whilst others have opted for a gorgeous silk pants suit because they feel the most like themselves in pants. Once your hair and makeup are done, you have some beautiful fresh flowers and you're wearing a flatering design in a colour you love, you'll find you shine on your special day, I would strongly advise going to see a designer who has the skills to create something special just for you, best of luck!

Congratulations !

This is a great question and I would be happy to give you some thoughts about choosing your dress, having celebrated my 70th this year.

As we age, our style naturally evolves. If anything, look for an effortlessly elegant style that flatters your figure and allows your personality to shine.

Tip: An empire waist is more elegant and as an older bride, soft lines typically would flatter your body.

You can 100% wear white, even if it's your second marriage! But if you really don’t want to wear white, perhaps look at shades like blush, grey, ivory, silver and even gold tones.

Tip: Truthfully.. you can choose a wedding dress in any color that suits your style, personality and complexion.

For the skirt, choose a length that you are most comfortable in. If your legs are one of your best features, why not think about a cocktail or tea-length dress.

Tip: Mid-calf A-line dresses are a classic and look great if you are shorter and carry a few extra pounds. You can also show off those great shoes if you wear a shorter wedding dress.

Choose a neckline, that doesn’t cut too deep into the cleavage.

Tip: A higher scooped neckline, bateau shape (boat) or V-neckline flatters, adds elegance and a hint of sexiness without going over the top.

What about having cap or flutter-style sleeves? They’re a great way to keep your shoulders and upper arms under wraps and still show off some skin. Or consider lace or illusion sleeves.

Tip: three quarter length sleeves work well as they flatter your hands and wrists.

Whether you buy your dress from a bridal boutique or have it designed and made from scratch with you in mind, the sky’s the limit when it comes to choosing your wedding dress style, and you deserve to shine and look stunning on your wedding day.

Warmest regards

Janice

Congratulations on your up coming wedding.  You can wear whatever you would like.  We recently designed and made a gown for a 74 year old bride.  She chose a soft blue, full length gown with a sleeve and soft layers of organza over the skirt.  She looked stunning.  More than happy to help further if youwould like.  Fell free to contact me directly at info@timelesselegance.com.au.  Good Luck going forward, Louise

Hi,  I absolutely hear you! I had my second marriage a few years ago and I was also after something that wasn't white. I went for soft mulberry coloured, ankle-length fitted Thai silk skirt, with an ivory Thai silk, corsetted strapless bodice. I accentuated the look with a removable, soft mulberry lace shoulder drape.

I would be happy to offer you a free 20-minute Zoom call to be able to guide you as to the best option for you. ?? As a Bridal Designer, I specifically design around a bride's body shape, colouring and vibe as we all have slightly different body shapes, proportions and inspirations. I believe that we are all beautifully unique and so should our wedding dresses be, whether it is the first or second time around! Just let me know via email if you would like to take me up on this offer and we can set up a mutually convenient time?

Kindly, Joanne

Firstly, congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

I would suggest soft colours, such as blush pink, champagne, nude or even a muted gold, possibly overlaid with an ivory lace for that gorgeous contrast.

Separates are always a good option.... a sheath dress with bolero or blouson; chiffon culottes with a vintage lace top; crepe tailored pants paired with a lace or crepe top for something more contemporary.

You probably have a strong sense of necklines etc that suit you but, if you're not sure, think back to the features of an outfit you have that is a favourite. What do you love about it? Can you look for some of those features in your wedding attire? It may be enough to give you a jumping off point.

Best of luck! x

Hi,

Separates are a terrific option to create a look that doesn't feel overly bridal. There are soft and fitted skirt options with a variety of lace tops or blouses.

Colours such as champagne or blush pinks are always lovely if you don't wish to wear white.

A bridal jumpsuit is another chic option. Wendy Makin offers a crepe jumpsuit that can be perfect.
