What exactly does the couple do during the cake cutting?

Do we just cut the cake? or are there other traditions?

Sweetcheeks Cookies and Cakes

It really depends! If there are no special cultural traditions, then you will cut the cake, pose for some photos to remember the moment by.
My husband is Polish and so we did a little tradition where the venue brings the married couple 2 shots - 1 a shot of vodka, and the other, a shot of water - they mix them up, so no one knows which is which and then we drank one each - whoever gets the vodka is supposedly the one who 'wears the pants' in the relationship. Things like this are fun, but of course not necessary. If you like the idea of something like this though and it's not part of your own cultural background - borrow someone elses! Google 'wedding cake cutting traditions' and see what comes up ;) Have fun with it!

What are the most common wedding cake flavours?

Sweetcheeks Cookies and Cakes

Flavours are to YOUR taste my sweet - you can ask what everyone else likes, (or what everyone sells :/) but it's completely up to you!
Do you and your guests like something lighter, but you don't want to be too plain? Something like Vanilla Passionfruit might be what you choose. Or if you and your family love rich decadence, perhaps a chocolate hazelnut (with nutella filling, mmmmm) mud cake is more your style. Remember if you're having more than 1 tier, you can mix and match flavours so you don't have to stick to just one. My wedding cake was Banana, White choc raspberry mud, Choc hazelnut mud, Vanilla Passionfruit, Red Velvet and Lemon Blueberry cake with coconut filling. (Yep, I had a 7 tiered cake - as a cake artist, I felt the pressure to go big! ha ha).
Whatever you choose, enjoy your wedding planning and make sure you choose a supplier who makes your life eeeeeaasy ;)
Best wishes!

Do wedding cakes have fake tiers?

Sweetcheeks Cookies and Cakes

They can, but only if you request it.
There's actually a misconception out there though - someone, somewhere, one day decided to put it out there that it's super cheap to do fake tiers...it's not! it's a bit cheaper, sure, - because instead of ingredients cost and baking time, there's only product cost - but the decorating time is just as long which you of course still pay for.
As far as value for money - you're better off getting more cake ;) If you choose the right supplier, the cake WILL be eaten. I did a wedding cake recently that would have fed 260 coffee serves... it was for a wedding of 90 guests... The bride told me there were 5 pieces left at the end of the night (and they were only left over because she wanted to take some home herself!).
I hope this is helpful and answers your question!
