OVERVIEW

Having conducted over 250 weddings my goal for you is simple -  to ensure your wedding ceremony is a minimal-stress experience that allows you and all your family and friends, to relax and indulge in every moment. To that expericence:

  • we honour the the solemnity of the moment, as reflected in the love and commitment that you are both celebrating
  • we add a measure of fun and lightheartedness
  • we hold an on-site rehearsal to ensure that all possibilities have been considered and catered for
  • I provide a quality sound system for both music and spoken word
  • I attend to and lodge all relevant paper work
  • you both live happily ever after!
  • Ok, so the last one is up to you guys, but you'll be well on your way.

So what makes a great wedding ceremony?  More than anything, it's the sincerety that the two of you bring to the occasion.  In and around everthing else that happens on the day of your wedding, the ceremomy is relatively brief but it is the moment that you will most want to remember as being a true reflection of who you both are, the love that you are celebrating and the commitment you are making.

My intention is that your ceremony provides a moment in time when you, together with all your family and friends get to pause and to briefly contemplate what it means to love and to be loved.  The words are easily found but it's the sincererty with which they are spoken that signals their true meaning.

About

My experience includes over 250 weddings in all manner of venues from city-central parks to country retreats, vineyard venues and beach side paradises. Along the way I've got to know many wonderful couples and had the honor of taking part in what is a truly special occasion. I first took up the role while living in Perth, WA and am now located on the South Coast of NSW, living off grid and growing my own veggies, which is also a whole lot of fun - when it works.

FAQ

Of course.  We all need to be confident that I can deliver the ceremony you both want and that we can easily work together.  A telephone or skype conversation will normally provide a pretty strong indication, but I am more than happy to meet with you, when and wherever possible, so that you can more easiy decide.  Over coffee is always good.

Location is normally the single biggest factor that will determine any changes to my fee.  My standard fee is based on me not needing to travel more than an hour or so from my home here on the south coast.  In such a situation I need to consider time and fuel costs, particularly as I believe an on-site rehearsal in the week leading up to the ceremony itself is pretty critical.

After that, we might have to discuss danger money if you want to get married half way down a mountain.  Extreme sports aside, most things can be incorporated.

Sure, we can inlude any prayers or readings, regardless of their origin, that are important to you and your family.  What I can't do, is intimate or suggest that I might be the equivalent to a priest or an elder of a religious or spiritual group.

Rule of thumb, most ceremonies fall within a time frame of around 20 minutes from the time I begin to speak. So if you consider that the bride or partner might take a few minutes to walk up an aisle, across the grass or up the beach, plus a few minutes for signing paper work and the odd photo, 25-30 minutes, in total, is a good guide.

Indeed there are.  First, I have to tell everyone present who I am and that I am, by law, registered to conduct a civil marriage ceremony.  It's a very short few lines and is easily included.

Second, there is a legal vow that must to be stated by each of you. Again, it's really brief, but a have to have. These are then typically followed by your own personal vows and here you can be as creative as you wish.

Lastly, I need to declare you to be married.

That's it!  Not a great impost and the rest is yours to do as you like.

Sure. The history associated wih the "giving away" is now all a bit lost and these days it just a lovely opportunity to acknowledge those who have made significant contributions to the lives of the couple.  To that extent, it might include everyone from either parent, both parents, family members or indeed everyone who is present, your very own village or community.

Patrick was a wonderful celebrant. His relaxed and cheerful approach was both supportive and calming on our busy day! He was very organised and thoughtful, and helped the whole ceremony run smoothly and just to our liking. His advice was really helpful and his delivery of the ceremony just what we had hoped for – fun and heartfelt. Thank you so much Patrick!

Patrick came as a recommendation from a friend. Overall we found his manner extremely professional which went a long way to in helping alleviate some of the anxiety we felt leading up to the big day. I'm looking for a funny celebrant in Melbourne/Canberra/Sydney?

If you'd travel to canberra, then I'd love to hear from you!

Patrick Meegan

Hi. In response to second part of question, I'm always happy to travel to Canberra and am a regular visitor.

In respone to first part of your question, I guess it depends on whether you are lookng for a celebrant who is also a comedian or whether you are looking for a celebrant who can write material that will reflect the humorous / funny sides of both your characters and that of your relationship and, of course, be able to deliver the same.  The first I am not, but the latter I can do and believe that a good measure of lightheartedness juxtaposed with the solemnity of the moment you are celebrating, always makes for a great ceremony.

Can a person with student/travel visa gets married in Australia?

During my trip to Melbourne, my partner proposed to me and we are planning to get married in Australia. However, he is holding a student visa while I'm traveling on a tourist visa. Please advice, thanks :)

Patrick Meegan

Yes.  You are both free to get married in Australia.  However, like all couples planning to be get married in Australia, you will be have to meet all the legal requirements before this can happen. This inlcudes lodging a notice of intended marriage form no less than one month prior to the date that you are hoping to be married on.  I recommend you speak with a celebrant or priest as soon as you can so that you can familarise yourself with the information you need to provide, legal requirements etc. You can also contact the nearest Births, Deaths and Marriage regsitry office for more information.
