Expert Advice

As a wedding professional, Janet Lomax ~ Sydney's Inner West Marriage Celebrant offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.

I'm not a religious but can I have my marriage ceremony in a church?

There are lots of beautiful chapels around Sydney, The Hunter Valley, The Blue Mountains and the Southern Highlands where you can be married, without having any religious feel ~ Just a gorgeous space!

Hope that helps!

I'm considering walking myself down the aisle, thoughts?

Has any other bride done this at one of your weddings?

Absolutely they have, but it can be a little bit daunting on the day, so I suggest that your bridesmaid/s either walk with you or just in front of you, so you are not totally alone!

how can i make my elopement special?

My seven elopement tipsWith Janet Lomax, Weddings I Do

1. Your wedding day is getting closer, so its really important to think about all that you want, and your perfect day!

2. Really think about your choices, and make sure this is exactly what you and your partner want, before you decide!

3. If you decide that you both truly want to elope, rather than the big wedding that you may be running away from, keep the style and beauty that you initially wanted.

4. Get the dress of your dreams & veil too, if that's what you have always dreamed about for your wedding.

5. Think about the two witnesses (legal requirement) that you want at your wedding ~ You could choose to have both parents or just two of your best friends or siblings to be with your at the moment you marry!

6. You have the dress and the suit, or perhaps a gorgeous summer dress and smart casual attire for your partner, but remember to think about your venue too. Do you have a favourite tree that holds lots of meaning for you, or is there a landscape that has always been "a must" for your wedding day?

7. If you are going to tell your family, either before or after your wedding, think about what you would love to happen then. Maybe a family dinner to celebrate, or something more casual with your family and friends or maybe you want to have a beautiful dinner ~ just the two of you.

Whatever you dream or want, is what I am very happy to help you create. I want to make your perfect day!

how can we make a mention of same-sex couples and marriage equality in our civil ceremony?

we're not gay ourselves, but our dear friends are and we were wondering if celebrants would be open to making a special mention of it during our ceremony

I always offer a paragrath just after the Monitum, which talks about how one day we hope that all Australian couples will have a the great priviledge of standing in front of their family and friends, and declaring their love, just as the bride and groom are today!

I need a suggestion for a special poem or reading

I am getting married next year on Remembrance Day and I would like a few words or a short poem commemorating mine and my fiance's grandparents. We would love to acknowledge their vintage weddings and we are having a vintage-themed wedding for this reason. There will also be two Veterans present at our wedding so I’d love a reading or poem that would appropriately honour them too.

Touched By An Angel We, unaccustomed to courage exiles from delight live coiled in shells of loneliness until love leaves its high holy temple and comes into our sight to liberate us into life. Love arrives and in its train come ecstasies old memories of pleasure ancient histories of pain. Yet if we are bold, love strikes away the chains of fear from our souls. We are weaned from our timidity In the flush of love's light we dare be brave And suddenly we see that love costs all we are and will ever be. Yet it is only love which sets us free.
