How does the whole dress shopping process work?

I am starting to get quite stressed about dress shopping! How does it all work? Some places say they like 9-12 months to make your dress but I am assuming that doesn't include alterations? I am getting married in Oct 26 and have some appts booked for the end of Nov. Just for a rough idea- whats the process? I go and try on dresses, find the one I love, order it, wait for it, then take it to be altered? I am hoping to lose some more weight and tone up before the wedding (I have a whole year pretty much) but how will that work with alterations? Are they usually done closer to the wedding or as soon as I get the dress? Can someone pretty please outline the process for one clueless bride? Yours sincerely, a very stressed gal xx

Hi lovely!

It’s completely normal to feel a little overwhelmed — dress shopping can seem confusing at first, but once you know the steps, everything starts to feel much smoother!

Here’s a simple breakdown:
1. Try-On & Choose: Start by booking a few appointments to try on different styles. Once you find the one, your stylist will help you confirm the size, colour, and any custom details.
2. Order & Production: Most made-to-order gowns take around 5–10 months (some faster, some longer). Off-the-rack options are available if your timeline is shorter.
3. Alterations: These are usually done 3–5 weeks before the wedding, once your body shape is close to final. That way, the fit will be perfect for your big day.
4. Final Fitting & Pick-Up: After production or alterations, you’ll have one last fitting to check every detail — then your gown will be freshly pressed and ready for collection!

If you’re planning to lose a bit of weight, no worries at all! Just let your consultant know, and they’ll guide you on the best timing for ordering and scheduling alterations accordingly

You’re already doing great — take it one step at a time and enjoy the journey of finding your dream dress:)

Warm wishes,

Our process, book an appointment for a consultation, try the designs from my collection or discuss specific ideas you may have. We then put together the perfect design and provide a quote. This can be for a design exactly as you've tried or a custom design created just for you. I can advise you on what will best work on your proportions, colouring and stlyle. There's no alterartion costs as your gown is custonm made to fit you perfectly, no matter what your size on your wedding date. We time the final fitting and pick up appointment to be between three and one week prior to your wedding so you can relax knowing the gown will fit you perfectly on the day.

We love 9-12 months to be organised, but can often accomodate a shorter time frame if our schedule allows, so it's good to get organised sooner than later. Once you decide to book in, we take a deposit and order all of the fabrics needed so they're here ready for your first fitting, which is usually five or six months prior to your wedding date. There are most often 4 fittings and a pick up appointment. You 'll see your gown take shape over the lead up to your wedding which is a lovely experience to share with your mum, sisters or bridesmaids. All of our gowns are made in our Sydney atelier in beautiful fabrics and you would be surpised that by the time you add the cost of alterations to an off the rack gown, you can have a custom made one, often at a comparable cost, so it's worth exploring your options before deciding.

What you're describing in your question is the process for an off the rack experience and gown that's made overseas in your nearest size, which then needs alterations. If you go down that route, you would line up the alterations so they are a month or so out from your wedding to ensure your gown will fit. This can add a huge amount to the cost of the gown, so make sure you ask lots of questions before you commit to buy your gown in a set size. By far the best option is going with a designer who will customise your dress to fit you perfectly. Best of luck, Louise xx

Hi there

Let us take the stress out of your wedding planning. The process begins at least 9 months before, at our store the longest it takes to order in a gown is 7 months. If you are looking at having one custom made , it is longer.

Once you find your gown it will be ordered to fit you as you are at the time of ordering. Most gowns can be altered to only two sizes max down, so be sure to explain tyour weight loss journey and be confident you will reach your goal. Once the dress arrives alterations are booked in at least two months before the wedding. Again the adjustments will be to fit you as you are then.We offer in house alterations so it all stays here it works out to be super easy and stress free.

Hope that has help ease your concern, please be mindful that other stores may have different timelines.

All the best !

Hi lovely,

You’re honestly right on track! Here’s how it works with Blanche Bridal ??

1?? Try-ons & consults: You’ll come in, try gowns with a stylist, and find your fave. It's goo to preselect some gowns on Instagram or Pinterest to show our stylists.
2?? Order: Our gowns are made-to-order and take about 10–12 months all up, including fittings, so like you’re planning is perfect.
3?? Production: Your gown is made to the closest size from our chart based on current measurements.
4?? Alterations: Once it arrives (around 1.5 - 2 months before the wedding), you’ll start fittings. Alterations are separate and done close to the wedding — perfect if you’re still toning up!
5?? Final pickup: About 2–4 weeks out for the last tweaks and try-on.

Hello, Bride-to-Be,

You pretty much have an idea of how the buying a dress process goes. There are a few options.

1. You could find adress off the rack, that you love and fits perfectly or may need some adjustments. Some bridal shops have inhouse alterations and usually have people they recommend.

2. You could find a dress, that will need to be ordered, which means they will measure you up and get your order sent off to be made overseas. This does take along time and best to get it in the process as soon as possible.

3. You could find a dress off Still white, which is a second hand resell website or find something on Facebook Market place.

If you are wanting to loose weight, as a dressmaker, I usually get a bride in for the fitting, whenever she is available and do, alterations like hems, and things that aren't related to your size as much. Then I get the bride in closer to the time or when she decides she has hit her goal weight and is over the weightloss phase.

It is best you try on all styles of dress at these appointments, to decide what shape suits your figure too, then you will have a better idea of why style is better suited to size alterations down the track. Having said that, anything can be done to a wedding dress. I have resized a dress from a size 16 down to a size 8.

Boobs are always an issue with wedding dresses, making sure they fit in the cups or are pushed up enough. So make sure the dress doesn't have massive cups and heaps of detail on the bodice, cause then that can be a costly alteration.

Depending on what size you are and how much weight you want to loose, can be a factors in what style of dress you choose. For example: alot of girls like the backless dress, but if you have a big bust,  you have no structure in the dress to hold your boobs in and will have to tape them etc.

Anyway, I hope that helps some.

At the end of the day, the dress picks the girl ;) and it will be the perfect one.
