Expert Advice

As a wedding professional, The Spit Roast Company offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.

As a vegan, should I be expected to serve animal products at my wedding?

The Spit Roast Company

Not if you dont want to....

But if your guests might enjoy the reception food more if there was meat included,

it would be a decision as to whats more important to you.

Besides, there are some lovely vegan dishes/recipes out there, perhapes give your Caterer

a list of some dishes/recipes that you like, to give them an idea what you would like served.

We would certainly try to offer a Vegan Menu, but it might be at a higher cost, certainly offer Vegetarian

and cut out the Meat if that suits you.

Then everybody's happy....!!!

Cheers Kelsey from The Spit Roast Company

Should we have an open bar?

My friends are big drinkers. Can we ensure it doesn't get too messy?

The Spit Roast Company

We suggest you hire just a Bar staffer to tidy, top up and clear the area, whilst the wedding/reception is going on.

We hire Bar staff with our Wedding catering and so do local pubs, if in a regional area. It is the most economical option.

I hope this helps,

What is your preferred dining style?

Not sure whether to do buffet, food truck style, sit down on cocktail! They all have their benefits and this is the one thing I am vague on

The Spit Roast Company

We are a Buffet Style Spit Roast Caterer, we offer a Buffet where guests are able to choose what they prefer to eat, as well as how much they choose to eat.  We also offer cocktail style Catering.  We think Buffets are still elegant and can be dressed up with our Fruit Carvings that Chef does for our Couples as a gift. We can set up elegant Buffets anywhere.  See our web site for photos.

Is it rude or unacceptable to only serve a main and wedding cake?

After quite a few issues with our first venue, we found a second venue that we love. Unfortunately they aren't able to cater to the late ceremony schedule we originally wanted. They have offered the solution of serving extra canapes before the ceremony but skipping the entree entirely so that the dining finishes within their time frame. Our guests will still get a choice of 2 mains and wedding cake for dessert with a fruit platter and cheese, but I don't know if it is rude not to have an entree. It feels weird to me to not serve an entree. Thank you.

The Spit Roast Company

No, its not Rude to skip the Entree, especially if Capapes are served before the ceremony.

The main thing is that your guests have enough food to keep hem happy, as many guests

turn up to weddings without eating all day, and arrive hungry.  So I think that would work

for all, not a problem!!   I hope that helps.

in your experience, are dry weddings boring?

The Spit Roast Company

They dont have to be.  If you supply Non-Alcoholic Sparkling wine or allow some BYO for those who need it.

Just make sure the food is good and plenty of it, as the food/drink can be the entertainment if in absense of a band or DJ or Dancers.

See what we do here:

We hope you have a great Day!!!

is a candy buffet overkill if we're having dessert and a cake?

The Spit Roast Company

It probably would be a sweet overload, but if you make it available to everyone at the start of your reception, during canape's (Finger Food service)

you could spread the sweet treats.   Some people like eating sweets to give themselves energy as Weddings can spread over 6-8 hours.

After all you can have whatever you want, & do the way you want, its your day. PS: If you are on the Sunshine Coast or not, we have Tips for Brides Blog on our web site, where we talk about lolly suppliers locally, and lolly bar buffet designs, if your interested.

can caterers cater for vegans?

The Spit Roast Company

Yes, quite often most caterers have some vegan options on their menus, and that is the case with us.

We can also adjust current menu dishes to suit Vegans, but still cater for those whom are not Vegans.

Just ask your choosen Caterer what thaey can do for you. Have a great Wedding day!!!

is the wedding toast always champagne?? what do we toast with at a dry wedding

The Spit Roast Company

We suggest that you toast with a non-alcoholic Sparkling Wine instead or a sparkling Punch.

We have noticed that this has been the choice of other Brides.

 I hope this helps.

if i KNOW people are on diets (weight loss), should i change my menu to suit them?

The Spit Roast Company

It is possible that if you are serving a Buffet, that your guests that are on a diet, can pick and choose for them selves what food they put on their plate and how much food they consume.  So I dont think you would have to change your menu, as they can choose to eat less of whatever food you choose to serve. Its your day afterall  !!!

im having a breakfast ceremony, do i offer champagne or? are people going to want to drink so early

The Spit Roast Company

For Breakfast Weddings, it is quite Traditional to serve Champagne and Mimosas as an elegant drink offering.

Mimosas can be half Champagne half Orange Juice Or there are variations like Cranberry Mimosas which are ideal for Breakfast.

They are also called Sunrise Cocktails or when Champagne is served with Breakfast it is called a Sunrise Breakfast.

The Spit Roast Company always suggests that Champagne mimosas be served, to their Client Couples on their Big Day.

How do I tell my guests I'm not providing alcohol?

The Spit Roast Company

***The Spit Roast Company suggests that you could put on your invitations that only soft drinks etc are supplied but BYO your favorite alcohol....

We would suggest that a Tea/Coffee station be set up with a Hot water Urn to be available & maintained throughout the day.***

What's some good things to serve during cocktail hour?

The Spit Roast Company

We would suggest our wide variety of Hot Finger Food Platters Eg: Vegetarian Spring rolls, Vegetarian Samosas, mini Dim Sim, Crumbed Chicken Breast, Prawn Won Tons, Crumbed Calamari, Flame grilled meatballs, Spicy Wedges w Sour cream & Dipping Sauces OR We have beautifully displayed Cheese Platters w Charcuterie of cured meats. Our Brides sometimes select both options and serving sizes are very substantial. We keep serving food til your guests are turning us away. Call us for more detail 5477-1650 We service the Sunshine Coast & Hinterland.

What are some unique catering ideas for my wedding?

I am not interested in a sit down style meal, and I hate buffets. Is there other ways to do this? The only one the interests me so far is food trucks, but can they feed 200 at once?! Should I have a few? Do most venues allow food trucks?

The Spit Roast Company

If your are on the Sunshine Coast, You would have to ask each venue if they allow Food Trucks. I would certainly question them if they could feed 200 at once. I would imagine, not. If you change your mind about having a Buffet, give us a call. 5477-1650 as we do offer unique additions as mentioned below.

We offer brides a Fruit Carving Display on your Buffet Hand Carved by our Chef. Please see our Fruit Carving Galley of Photos

Another Unique offering that we can supply is a whole Roasted Suckling Pig, decorated with fruit & carved at the buffet for your guests. Photos can be sent to you by request, or seen on our front page of our Web site:

Are caterers generally willing to incorporate some items you really love?

Or do most just have set packages?

The Spit Roast Company

We would try to, depends what you are requesting? Also, if its not an easy task, there could be extra expenses afforded to cover extra time or ingredients.

Do many caterers provide vegan alternatives?

A lot of my friends are vegan (30% of our guests) and I don't know how to navigate the food issue as my family all eat meat and will want it.

The Spit Roast Company

We do offer many Vegetarian Finger Food amongst our selections. For Main Course offerings we offer Vegetarian Lasagne w Toasted Eggplant, Grilled Zucchini & roasted tomato passata with or without bechamel sauce w Feta/ ricotta/Tasty cheese . Or we have a selection of Roasted Vegetable Creamy Quiches which are so popular when served. If you have any specific requests, we could certainly discuss the possibilities & create together.

How many canapes should you serve during cocktail hour at a wedding?

The Spit Roast Company

A selection of about 7-8 canapés, to keep your guests satisfied, as a limited selection can get repetitious, even though a main course may follow.

Keep the time between canapés & the main course to 1-1.5 hours, as guests tend to arrive without eating beforehand.

Warm Regards, Kelsey from The Spit Roast Company 07 5477-1650
