Primarily someone who has completed the Certificate IV in Celebrancy from a registered training organization (RTO) and registered with the Attorney- General's Department in Canberra.

These days Celebrants all complete a Certificate IV in Celebrancy (which is a 12 month course).  Once that is completed, we go through a ardous application process with Dept of Attorney Generals, which includes sitting a test, obtaining professional referrees, having a police check and composing marriage ceremonies for the Dept to view to ensure we are capable of holding the registeration.  We also have to complete 5 hours of ongoing professional development yearly.  But it is all worth it as we get to marry beautiful couples and make their life complete!

Anyeone over the age of 18 can become a celebrant. In the past many have obtained the qualification just to perform the wedding of someone close to them. However they dont last very long as there are annual costs such as registration and ongoing development and advertising is quite costly. So they dont get the weddings and therefore dont get experience which in turn hinders them getting more ceremonies. Those who do get a significant number of weddings really enjoy their vocation and perform ceremonies with all their heart and all their soul.

Good afternoon great question. any one can be a celebrant, it takes 12 monrhs to do the course and it is very expensive to do so if it is just for your wedding then you need the person to really think about it.

Hope this helps

PS the people that trained me are the Celebrants Training Collage they helped me a great deal

great responses below .... you can also have a freind perofrm the ceremony in the presence of a celebrant.  There are a few legal requirements however the celebrant can take a minor role if you prefer to have a friend take the lead.  Best wishes for your wedding day.  Cheers Andrew : )

A celebrant needs to complete a Certificate 1V in Celebrancy and become registered with the Attorney-General’s department. A celebrant has to also be considered ‘a fit and proper person’ within the Australian community.

A celebrant would need to be over the age of 18, have a minimum of a Cert 4 in Celebrancy, and be registered with the Commonwealth Attorney-General department.

Not surprisingly, a whole wide range of people can be marriage celebrants. We can be young or old, religious or not religious, but we need to complete required training and a registration process with the Attorney-General Department. We need to be a fit and proper person in the community.

It helps if you have good people skills and confidence in public-speaking. I think a sense of fun and a passion for what we do also helps!
