There are many different types of suits on the market at the moment. It just depends on the feel of the occasion that you are going for - you could have a very formal look, with satin collars, buttons and jacket trimmings, you could even include a vest to make it that extra formal, or you could go for a tailor made option (which we offer at Jon Kell Menswear), customised and tailored to your preferences.

There are also the off-the-shelf options. These are suits that can be worn again and are a bit more versatile in that context. They are not limited to just the look you wore on your wedding day. The great thing about a suit like that is you can change the shirt, tie, shoes and belt to create a whole new look.

In short, there are many different options for wedding suits, it all comes down to the look and feel of your special day.

There are two main kinds of suits in use by Australian men for weddings:

1. Lounge Suit

2. Tuxedo/Dinner suit

"Lounge suit" is a very nebulous term and more or less means "anything that isn't a dinner suit" (more on those in a bit). Any suit that you can wear to work or to the races, etc, is a lounge suit.

A dinner suit (a.k.a tuxedo) is a suit with a satin front to the lapels (the part of the suit collar that sits on the chest is a lapel). Dinner suits are used for very formal and fancy events that are usually held in the evening, hence the "dinner" part of the name. Dinner suits usually require a specific shirt and accessories to go with them to be considered a "true" tuxedo.

A subset of both of these is the three-piece suit. Any suit with an available waistcoat is considered a three-piece, and both lounge and dinner suits can be three pieces.

You can also get suits that are called "tailcoats" but in our experience those are very difficult to obtain. They're very old-fashioned, European formal attire. They do exist, but if you're looking for one of those we wish you the best of luck.

There are many types of wedding suits, but menswear only falls into three formal categories. Black Tie, White Tie and Formal.

Black Tie - this is a dinner suit, and can be accessorised to your pleasure. Popular accessories include braces and shirt studs. The type of suit here is any suit that has a satin lapel finish. The base colour can be whatever you please, and Instagram and Facebook are loaded with images. The colour of the satin can contrast or match the suit, but most dinner suits have black satin lapels.

Formal - this refers to any suit with a matching trouser. The lapel finish matches the suit fabric also, and generally the buttons are of a matching colour. Accessories like vests, bowties, coloured shoes (usually brown) and ties bars are popular with this dress standard.

White tie - Strictly Tails coat, with a white marsala vest, and matching white bowtie. Optional wing tip shirt, but must be a dinner shirt, optional marsala finish also. Generally worn with black patent leather shoes. This dress standard is rarely worn but the most formal. Think, White House wedding, or Buckingham Palace dinner.

These dress standards will help you select a suit, but remember to think about where you are getting married, what you want it to match, compliment or blend with. As a general guide the boys suits will provide base for your photo's and a stylist will understand how to use the suits to maximise the look for your venue, flowers and the gents individual looks.

There are many different suits for weddings from high formal to smart casual and everythign inbetween. We suggest picking a suit to complement with your wedding venue, dresses and guest attire. For example if it is a beach wedding you would likely wear a more casual linen/cotton suit vs a city black tie wedding where you would wear a formal tuxedo. For the inbetween there is not too much difference between a wedding suit and one you would wear for other occasions (eg. engagement parties) and the standard colours (Navy, Black, Charcoal and Grey) still apply. It comes down to what you pair it with. A plain navy suit for example that could be work for a business meeting and paired with a business shirt and tie could also work for a wedding when peair with an ivory/white shirt and wedding tie (pastal light colours). This gives the groom/groomsmen versatility of their suit after the wedding.

Unfortunetly there is no short answer to your question, but i would recommend focusing on the totality of the wedding and finding a suit that compliments the wedding theme/styles as a whole.

There are many different styles of wedding suits to 'suit' your needs on your wedding day! If your wedding is more formal you might go for a three-piece option (jacket, vest, pants), you might opt for a simple black tie get up (jacket, pants) or you could even go for a tuxedo or a vest-only piece. Don't be afraid to have a bit of fun with your suit though! We've seen heaps of pairing of velvet or coloured suit jackets with black suit pants that look devine, and more grooms are thinking outside the box. The wedding doesn't just have to be about your partner! Think about whether or not you want to make a statement with your suit and try a few different styles on to see which one helps you make that statement the best.
