Buying your wedding suit is a big decision, and there are a few key factors to consider to ensure you look and feel your best on the big day. Here’s what to keep in mind:

1. Suit Style & Formality

  • Consider the formality of your wedding – is it black tie, formal, semi-formal, or casual?
  • A tuxedo is perfect for black-tie events, while a well-tailored suit works for most formal and semi-formal weddings.

2. Colour & Theme

  • Match your suit to the wedding colour scheme and season.
  • Classic choices like navy, charcoal, and black are timeless, while lighter shades (beige, light grey, dusty blue) work well for summer or outdoor weddings.
  • Consider how your suit complements the bride’s dress and the groomsmen’s attire.

3. Fit & Comfort

  • A well-fitted suit makes all the difference—pay attention to shoulder width, jacket length, and trouser break.
  • Ensure you have room to move comfortably, especially for dancing and long hours of wear.

4. Fabric Choice

  • Wool suits are versatile and breathable for year-round wear.
  • Linen or cotton suits are great for summer and outdoor weddings.
  • Velvet or textured fabrics add a unique touch for winter or formal evening weddings.

5. Accessories & Details

  • Don’t forget ties, bow ties, pocket squares, cufflinks, and shoes to complete your look.
  • Consider a waistcoat for a more formal three-piece look.
  • Match metals (watch, cufflinks, belt buckle) for a polished finish.

6. Timing – When to Buy

  • Start shopping at least 8–10 weeks before the wedding to allow time for alterations.
  • If custom-made, allow 4–6 weeks for production and adjustments.

Hi :)

Of all things to consider i often find Budget and timeline will be the biggest factors. Allowing yourself the right budget to get what you want is very importatant and will require a little research to find out average costings of say tailor made and off the rack. Your timeline leading up to the wedding will also require some thought, you may want a suit made but only have two weeks, leaving only a off the rack options for instance.

The last things I notice people getting confused about is tailoring for an off the rack suit. Not all tailor stores are the same. If you can find a store that will fit the suit for you then generally speaking you are in safer hands. The risk you run buying a suit from a novice is that it is the wrong size and you will spend too much changing the fit, and still not be happy or worse, not being able to fix the problems.

So ask around, talk to people you know and try to find a trusted store/ tailor in your area.

Hope this helps!

Regards

Xavier

Hi there,

Firstly copngratulations on your enagement!

Things to consider when buying a wedding suit are;

- Price

- Do you want something made to measure or off the rack?

- What month are you getting married in and how can this effect the style?

- What will the dress code be? Lounge suit, black tie, cocktail?

- How many groomsmen are you having and would you all like to be wearing the same suit?

- How much time do you have? Made to measure takes 12 weeks

I hope this helps you!

Consider the body shape of the man and determine if ready to wear or bespoke custom attire is best for him.
