Wedding of the Year: Mel and Ben win December

By: /Updated on: March 16, 2022

Good-luck rain on your wedding day?

Mel and Ben Groves know it. They’ve taken out the December spot in our 2016 Wedding of the Year competition!

The far north Queensland couple’s full moon wedding fell on what was the wettest May day in nearly 100 years. Their visions of an outdoor ceremony were swept away in the downpour and last minute logistics had them saying ‘I do’ on the deck.

Despite all this, bride Mel says the day could not have turned out better.

“The night was filled with live music and towards the end of the night the heels were off, gumboots were out and everyone was dancing in the rain…literally,” she says.

“I can’t count how many of our friends and family tried to make us feel better by telling us it’s supposed to be good luck if it rains on your wedding day.

“Hopefully now luck is on our side, we can take on the world.”

Absolutely! Mel and Ben are now in the running for a dreamy Vanuatu honeymoon staying at the acclaimed Havannah Resort, flying Air Vanuatu. Voting kicks off on February 1.
