We have a winner! Thurza & Michael of Melbourne have been voted our favourite couple in the 2014 Wedding of the Year competition.
I don’t think it matters how many times I read this story, it still makes me well up with emotion. Like, literally, knot in my stomach, lump in my throat and tingling goosebumps all over.
I imagine it’s these very feelings invoked in everyone else that resulted in the staggering number of votes, higher than any other of our 12 amazing nominees, and in fact, higher than even our inaugural 2013 winners Sinead & Matt.
Thurza says, “I posted the news on Facebook to an OVERWHELMING response! People have been in tears! I think everyone who voted for us feels as though they have won too – it’s just been an incredibly uplifting experience for everyone involved.”
She summed up her better-late-than-never marriage to long-time partner Michael with “it was a damp, poignant, wonderful day – wonderful for Michael and I, but also incredibly special to have our children there.”
Photographer Tizia May captured this sentiment precisely and, absolutely beautifully. She says, “I was so fortunate to photograph their very intimate wedding. The weather was cold and wet but nothing could dampen their happiness. I loved this couple from the moment I met them.”
And we, too, loved this couple the moment Tizia sent in her submission back in July last year. They certainly weren’t your typical bride and groom, that’s for sure. They were older, had kids (who essentially did the proposing!) and their wedding was a raw and intimate gathering of just six guests, under an old oak tree on a rainy Melbourne day.
But the one comment from Thurza that really struck me, which ultimately led to their nomination for competition was, “We’d given all those vows a good testing over the years and I was so impressed by Michael’s response to ‘in sickness and in health’ that after 21 years together it was finally the right time to get married.”
Like I said. Goosebumps.
“We are so looking forward to this very special holiday together,” says Thurza. “The prize is unbelievably luxurious!!”
(Can I come too?)
From all of us at Easy Weddings, congratulations and we wish you both the very best. xx
