Who pays for what?

Weddings are more than just a one-day party these days. They’ve become bookmarked by several events that lead up to the big day, and can take a little bit of commitment and lots of planning from the bridal party. But don’t fear if you’re a bridesmaid, you aren’t expected to foot the bill for all of these events, and your touch on them doesn’t always need to be significant. However, some events might need a little bit more of your attention – and some of your finances.

What do brides pay for?

Traditionally, the bride covers certain costs associated with her bridal party, though expectations can vary based on budget and preferences. Typically, the bride pays for the bouquets for her bridesmaids, their hair and makeup on the wedding day (if it’s professionally done), and sometimes accommodations the night before the wedding or a thank-you gift for each bridesmaid. If the bride has specific requirements for accessories or shoes, she may also choose to cover those costs to ensure consistency without burdening her bridal party.

What do bridesmaids pay for?

On the other hand, bridesmaids are generally expected to pay for their dresses, shoes, and any alterations. They also usually cover travel and lodging expenses for the wedding, contribute to the bridal shower and bachelorette party (both in terms of planning and costs), and often buy a wedding gift. In some cases, bridesmaids might also chip in for group hair and makeup services, especially if not fully covered by the bride.

So, to keep it simple, bridesmaids traditionally pay for:

  • Bridesmaid dress
  • Some of the bachelorette party
  • Travel to the wedding
  • Accommodation at the wedding (except for the night of the wedding, which is often covered by the couple)
  • Gift for the couple
  • Hair and makeup, if something beyond the bride’s brief is wanted
  • Accessories for the day – although the bride often gifts this

It’s best to remember that this is all based of tradition. As more and more couples dump traditions and do their own thing, expectations also go out the window. Many brides foot the bill for a lot, or bridesmaids can choose their own dresses within their budgets.

Can’t afford to be a bridesmaid? Here’s what to do

It’s no secret that with the rising cost of living we’re starting to budget a little harder. If you’ve been asked to be a bridesmaid but the thought of shelling out that much money is making you sweat a little, the best thing to do is be honest early on.

Weddings can be expensive, and while the honour of being part of someone’s big day is meaningful, it shouldn’t come at the cost of your financial well-being or you getting anxious and frustrated at the situation. Before committing, take a realistic look at the potential expenses and assess whether you can comfortably manage them alongside your other responsibilities. If not, remember that true friends will understand and appreciate your honesty.

Can I say no?

When saying no, approach the conversation with kindness and gratitude. Let the bride know how much it means to be considered and how much you care about her, but be clear about your limitations. You might say something like, “I’m incredibly honoured that you asked me to be a bridesmaid, and it truly means a lot. I’ve thought about it a lot, and I’m afraid I won’t be able to participate in the way I’d like to because of financial reasons. I’d still love to support you and celebrate with you however I can.” This shows your love and support while respecting your own boundaries.
