One trend that we adore is incorporating chalkboards into weddings, and it works particularly well with rustic and country-themed weddings. However, why restrict yourself to using chalkboards in the traditional ways (as a chalkboard) when you could be so much more creative?
Chalkboard paint is now widely available in most craft and hobby stores. It even comes in a spray can as well as in traditional paint form which means that it is easy to transform almost any surface into chalkboard. Check out some of our favourite ideas for using chalkboard at your wedding.
If you are going to be placing bottles of wine on the tables at your reception then you might want to try this simply idea to help make them look prettier and fit in with your décor. Just remove the labels and spray them with chalkboard paint. You can then write or draw whatever you like on the bottles. You don’t need to use full bottles of wine. You could use the same effect on empty bottles to use as décor items.
Label your glasses
If you are having a fairly informal wedding reception where guests are likely to be walking around a lot rather than staying seated at a table then you might like to try this smart idea. Add a ‘label’ to your glassware using chalkboard paint and have your guests write their name on it when collecting their glass. That way it will be easy for everyone to keep track of their drinks. There is nothing worse than setting your glass down on a table to have a dance and then not knowing which one was yours. This solves that problem for your guests and will look great!
DIY signs and photo props
Chalkboard is also a great way to create signs and photo props. We love this ‘Thank You’ sign and think that this would be the ideal image to print on a postcard to send out to guests after the wedding. Other versions you might like to try could be a “Just Married” sign or maybe one that says “Mr & Mrs”.
Great rustic bomboniere
As noted, chalkboards really fit in with the whole rustic theme that is big right now. You could try incorporating it into your bomboniere for some really unique mementos of your Wedding Day! There are lots of ways that you could do this from simply using chalkboard tags, to actually using it on the items themselves. How about a chalkboard picture frame, or adding a chalkboard panel to traditional favour pails and bottles to allow you to write a message or a guest’s name on them. There are lots of possibilities to explore.
A Wedding Day Countdown
In the run up to your wedding, you could use a cute plaque with a chalkboard accent to keep a tally of how many days are left until your big day. These can be personalized and will make a great little keepsake!
You could even have your invitations and other wedding stationery printed up to resemble chalkboard. We have seen some gorgeous examples of this technique from RBH Designer Concepts including this stunning chalkboard stationery which incorporates coloured ‘chalk’ for some extra flair.
If you want to give the chalkboard sign idea a little bit of a twist, then why not think about including them in your processional. Imagine your flower girl or ring bearer walking down the aisle before your grand entrance holding a gorgeous chalkboard sign that says ‘Here comes the bride!’ This is an adorable idea which will catch your guests’ attention just in time for you to emerge and wow them in your dress!

Games for younger guests
If there are going to be children at your wedding then you could get large chalkboards printed with word searches or knots and crosses games. This is a great way to entertain the children – and let’s face it the grown ups are going to love it too!
You could even incorporate chalkboard texture into your wedding cake! We came across this stunning cake recently which has been decorated to look just like it is made from chalkboard! This is a truly unique and creative idea and we think it looks simply stunning!
The best part about chalkboard paint is that it is so versatile that it goes anywhere! That makes it an excellent material for making your wedding day décor items. You could use chalkboard paint to create everything from banners to place settings. All you need is a little imagination.
