Should we have first dance lessons?

Neither of us can dance so we're considering getting lessons for our first dance. But we don't want anything too choreographed and awkward so we don't want to pay for full on routine dancing. Is it worth paying for dance lessons and will we benefit from them?

Hi Roxanne,

I've been asked this question many times, and the best response I can give you, is that it really depends on what vision you have for your First Dance.

A choreographer will take your song suggestion and create a sequence of movement inspired by the song's rhythms and musicality. They will then teach you in a structured and progressive manner often backed by extensive teaching experience to ensure you are able to learn and perfect your dance to look spectacular on your big day.

That being said, getting a choreographer can also mean having to make time for your lessons which can be both good or bad, because it could actually force you to make time for it, or it could become an added stress for you.

Now, if you're looking for are just some simple moves that you can repeat and alternate between in your first dance, then this is definitely something you can do by yourselves, YouTube has heaps of videos you can refer to! But if what you're after is someone with experience to do it for you with teaching expertise, than a choreographer is the way to go.\

Either way, it really comes down to what you want, so take your time, talk it out, and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for :)

Kindest Regards,

Auntora

Hey Roxanne,

For most, the first dance is the last "event" in the timeline of the entire day and is much anticipated by guests. For a lot of my couples, the process of learning to dance becomes much needed quality time together as the intencity of planning a wedding increases. For something that looks comfortable and natural, a handful of lessons should do.

It doesn't have to be too fancy, but practice and repetition will give you something natural and intimate.

Hi Roxanne,

Absolutely!  The wedding dance is such a wonderful part of your reception, and really highlights yourselves for an intimate point in time.  Why not share your love through the movement of dance with family and friends - a great wow to WOW them.  The part about learning to dance is the time that you get to share with your fiance through all of the wedding planning process.  I find that my brides and grooms love learning to dance, as it is fun and something that they can do together. Your routine doesn't need to be over choreographed, so I would suggest around 3 private lessons. If that sounds too much, and depending on your lead in time, why not try an Adult Beginners Ballroom class - just to get some steps?  Can be a cheaper option as well. Your First Dance is based in Brisbane, and we operate evenings and weekends to fit in with your schedule. Please check our website & Instagram pages.  Warm Regards, Jody - Your First Dance.

Yes definately :)

We are based on the Central Coast and operate 7 days a week. This makes it easy for couples to fit lessons into there schedule rather then "its too hard to fit a dance lesson in." Our lessons are fun and from beginner level.  To learn from the basic technique to a mastepiece, anything is possible.  Please view our Instagram, Facebook and YouTube Accounts for inspiration and happy to work our a price for communters and lesson times from 2 hours to compensate the travel. :)

Hi Roxanne, I definitely recommend still having dance lessons however, if you don't want anything to elaborate you can get away with just having a few lessons. For your situation I would recommend three lessons for you to get the most benefit from. This will allow you to learn a few basics moves that you can perform confidently in time to the music. These lessons should be tailored more to the two of you learning basic moves, learning how to move together without stepping on each other's toes and also dancing in time to the music which is often the hardest to master.

Jessica Prince - Come Dance With Me offers a package of 3 one hour lessons for $250 but I also offer a trial lesson for you and your partner to come in and just see for yourselves how beneficial just a few lessons can be.

I would love to say, yes get some form of a lesson, even if it's only help you look like you know what you're doing. Your choice of music coordinated with DRY ICE clouds & theatrical fireworks will look fantastic on video if you are "gracefully dancing" AND you will enjoy it.
