Expert Advice
As a wedding professional, Field of Vision Photography offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.
Get Expert Advicedo i specifically have to tell my photographer what shots i want, or should i trust them
ive read heaps of forums with brides saying their photographer missed the 'dress hanging up shot' etc. to avoid this happening to me, should i be making a list of shots i want for my photographer?

Truthfully, I think that it's YOUR wedding day and in my experience over the last 17 years, every couple is different. What's important to you on your wedding day is what matters.... So I always ask my couples what do THEY hope to get from their images, WHO is important that we capture besides the obvious suspects.
Then I believe it's my job as the professional to help you see that we can achieve for you. My job is make sure that you feel relaxed and look divine, ceating beautiful images that you know no one else will be able to capture for you.
I don't believe in showing a photographer someone elses images and asking them to "copy these" (unless it's from the photographers own website), as that can be disasterous and only leave you feeling "let down" if the image that's re-created for you is not the same or no where near as good as the original.
Rather, when it comes to the creative images, I ask my couples to 'trust me' as I'm always inspired by what the bride, groom and bridal party are wearing and the feel of the wedding they've created and by the cars and venues they've chosen. This then allows me to create something ORIGINAL just for them..... I think that's far more special and beautiful and to be honest, seeing our couples 'gasp' at their images when they return to view them for the first time is what I live for....
So in summery, great communication between yourself and your photographer is paramount. Make sure they know the what the important things are and who are the important people, but try not to micro manage the "creative" part of the shoot, as you will find that great reputable "Professional" photographers will amaze you with what they can do, when allowed full creative licence...... After all, that's what you're paying them for, their skill and creativity.
whats the difference between cheap photographers and expensive ones?
like is it experience or talent or does it depend on if they are full time? I'm looking to spend between $2000-2500
Field of Vision Photography
Great question! There is a MASSIVE difference. It's really important that you research your photographer carefully as there are many "not so professional photographers" charging "professional" fees.
I would look to see if they belong to an industry body, such as the AIPP and are an "Acredited" photographer, it's also impreative that you ask to see a few full weddings if you have any doubts, as anyone can "get lucky" with a few good shots, but you need to see that they know "all the right moments" to capture.
Do they understand using beautiful lighting, and know how work in all kinds of adverse situations like low light, rain, etc etc., What are their back up plans? Do they have all the correct insurances, such as public liability, and can prove it? Do they have back up camera's should a piece of equipment break? All those are very real costs for a professional photographer. Cheaper photographer's don't usually have all those things in place as it's very expensive.
Then listen to how they advise you, if they sound confident and come up with lots of ideas and suggestions for you to help make the day and photography easy and special for you, or if they are wanting you to guide them on everything and aren't forth coming, well ....... that can be a tell tale sign.
But more than that....... You only have ONE chance at getting it right for your wedding day. When you spend thousands of dollars on "feeding and drinking" people for one day, and on all the accesories, dresses and clothing, decorations, flowers, venue and food etc., and a year perhaps of your life planning potentially the most special moment of your life to date, surely you would want to make sure that it's captured properly, without you having to worry if the photographer was actually going to deliver what they promise........ that would just be heartbreaking.
There is always a budget for your wedding, but truely, photography is not one of the items I would choose to skimp on if at all possible, because your images are all you have left once everything is said and done, and one of the most important things you will cherish for the rest of your life everytime you look at them. Hope that's helpful : )

Ahhhh my lovelies, thank you soooo much for your beautiful sentiments.... it really means a lot! Boy what a journey! I have to say, with all the rescheduling during covid, my heart was breaking for you - but hey, we got there in the end and what a WONDERFUL wedding it was! To be fair Sherwin, photographing another accomplished photographer always adds a wee bit of pressure ha ha ha - but I was excited by the challenge and we all just hit it off right from the start! I genuinely loved the collaboration and fun we had! What a beautiful couple, 'inside and out' to "play" with! Big Hugs Shireen xxx
