FAQ

At Magnolia Images we provide a range of packages, which we refer to as ‘Collections’.  We can showcase your images in a custom designed album by choosing one of our three album collections,  or we also have a collection for those just wanting digital images.

We can provide you with a brochure that describes all our collections in more detail, what is included and the price.  Just email an enquiry and we will provide you with a copy.

If we don’t have a Collection that suits your needs, we are very happy to customise our coverage to suit your needs.  Just ask us!!!

Yes, you can!  All our packages come with digital images on a crystal USB, beautifully presented and boxed.  Having your digital images means you can reproduced and print images how you like, however we are also on hand to organise printing for you.

Some of the larger wedding photography businesses have a number of in-house and contract photographers and you may not meet your allocated photographer before your wedding day. The images displayed on websites and promotional material may not have been taken by the photographer you have been allocated.

At Magnolia Images, Alison McWhirter will be photographing your wedding.  Alison may also have a second shooter/assistant to ensure additional elements of your day are not missed however Alison will always be the lead photographer.  You will get to know Alison personally through an initial face to face meeting, phone and email contact or at your 'E' Session (engagement photo session should you book it in). By the time your wedding comes around Alison will seem like part of the family!

It is important that your photographer has a broad base of photography skill and experience and has consistently applied this to weddings. Wedding photography requires expertise over a number of photographic genres (macro, photojournalistic, portraiture, event and creative photography) and the ability to transition from one genre to the next very quickly.

If your photographer is serious about their craft they will be a member of their professional body.  In Australia we are represented by the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP).  Accredited members of the AIPP have 'met high standards for their skill, experience and professional business conduct (including insurance)’.

Alison is an accredited member of the AIPP, and also runs her a commercial photography business and has photographed weddings over the past five years.

Yes I can!

Second shooters are an additional cost on top of the wedding package you choose but the benefits can certainly outweigh the added expense. Second shooters will concentrate on getting additional photos of your day from different angles and viewpoints to what the lead photographer is shooting.  This investment really comes into it’s own during certain parts of the day such as the ceremony and reception, where typically photographers are shooting photojournalistic style, capturing moments as they occur rather than setting up shots.  Having a second shooter there to capture the same moment but from a different angle or on a different type of lens can really tell the story of that moment in a more complete way (i.e. from both the Bride’s and Groom’s perspective).

We suggest you consider having a second photographer if you opting for a photography package that includes a designed album, just so there is broader choice of images to include in your design.

Alison uses Canon bodies (currently the 5DMkIV, 5DMkIII and 5DS) and a variety of prime and zoom lenses.  Alison has her favourites - the 24-70mm, 70 - 200mm f2.8 and the 85mm f1.2 but most equipment is used at some stage during a wedding day. As well as shooting natural light there are also times that require additional light sources (such as receptions, creative portraits etc.) so Alison also carries a variety of artificial light sources.

And yes we always carry backups!

Yes!  Alison has extensive experience in using flash both on camera and off camera.  She not only brings it into play if there is bad lighting, but also for creative effect!!!

Whether a photographer has previously photographed at your ceremony and/or reception location should not determine whether or not to engage them.  Your wedding is unique; your bridal party, the decorations, the weather conditions, the time of year, changes to the venue etc.  and each wedding should be photographed with fresh eyes.

It is helpful to know that 'there is a gorgeous elm tree just over the rise' or 'there's an amazing spiral staircase at the back of the reception venue' - so a good photographer who hasn't photographed there before (or for a whilke) will ensure they visit the property prior to the day.

And this is the standard appraoch taken by us at Magnolia Images - not only will we go visit a venue ahead of the day but we also like to meet the venue event manager to discuss how they have things organised to make yor day run smoothly.

Providing a quality service includes timely delivery of your digital images and/or album. We aim to have your digital images to you within a month of your wedding. So it shouldn’t be too long after you get home from your honeymoon that you will be able to relive your wedding day again. Perfect!

Some people ask us why it takes this long. Depending upon the coverage, we regularly capture between 1500-2000 images. The images then need to be uploaded, backed up, backed up again, short listed, cropped and processed (basic edit for colour, contrast etc.) before downloading them to a USB and delivering to you.

Images used for albums require further editing eg. skin retouching/creative edit before final approval of the design layout can be obtained by the Bride and Groom.  Once we have approval, album suppliers can take up to 6 weeks to produce (sometimes longer during peak season).

So Albums will take longer to be delivered than your digital images, however Magnolia Images will help you to make final decisions regarding album design to move the process along as quickly and smoothly as possible.  We will do a first design for couples to consider, from there it’s usually just a few changes, maybe swapping over few photos or tweaks to some layouts to achieve final approval.

We always shoot in digital ‘RAW’ which means the images have to be processed so they can be used.  During processing we will enhance the file where needed, including increasing colour saturation, contrast, vibrancy etc. We also create JPEGs in high resolution for printing and low resolution for social media, sharing and screen viewing.  These are the images that are included on your USB.

If you are having an album designed or a wall art created by Magnolia Images,  we will also do additional editing where required to ensure the image will print correctly on that medium.  We may also do some additional creative editing to suit the look and feel of the album page layout or wall art.

No we don’t. Our passion is providing stills photography to our Brides and Grooms and we love directing all our energy to capturing your special day in this way.

We can happily recommend videographers who have similar values in providing their expertise and providing their service to Brides and Grooms.

Yes.  Professional wedding photographers should have you sign a contract that clearly sets out the expectations of both the photographer and the client.  At Magnolia Images we have our wedding photography contract that you will be able to read before booking.

What drove me to book Alison was how beautiful of a person she is. She's a pleasure to deal with and has made me so proud of my wedding photo's. She gave guidance, a personalised service and most important, I didn't have to worry about a thing.

Should wedding photographers have two cameras?

Magnolia Images

There are a couple of really good reasons why wedding photographers should carry more than one camera when photographing a wedding.

Firstly, back up, back up, back up!

Photographers are taking a huge risk if they are only shooting with a single camera.  It really is like running the gauntlet of mechanical malfunction, the camera being dropped or knocked, or heavens forbid, a theft - the ability to capture a wedding day could be wiped out at any turn if just one camera is being used.  While all good professionals will have insurance to replace equipment, a wedding day is irreplaceable.  If unavoidable problems emerge during the day and a photographer doesn't have the ability to shoot because they haven’t got a spare, then they have just missed capturing the most important day of a couple’s life together, and that is total disaster!   I don't know of any good wedding photographer that would unnecessarily stress themselves by not having a back up.

Having a couple of camera bodies also means photographers can work really efficiently with multiple lenses because they are not wasting valuable time changing between lenses on the one camera body.  This is particularly important during parts of the day where a more photojournalistic mode is required, such as during the ceremony.  This is where moments are being captured as they unfold, rather than the photographer 'setting up' the shot.  Shooting with multiple cameras, each with a different lens attached, means a photographer can shoot the same scene in a variety of ways without missing precious moments.

Currently I carry at least three camera bodies and variety of lenses when phtoographing a wedding.
