I have been photographing weddings for over 29 years. My Dad was an artist and photographer, he gave me my first camera when I was 11. Published in a both Black and White and Photography World in the 90's,commencing business in 1994 around modeling and glamour. I still love the profession for the joy it gives couples to see their special day captured as it happens.

Some brides book 3 to 4 years in advance, some one week! If you are after a particular date in a popular month like November March or April look to book at least 12 months out
What happens during a pre-wedding or engagement photo shoot?
I think an engagement shoot could be nice but I'd love to be more comfortable about what normally happens at one of these, obviously it's different to the wedding. I'm pretty awkward in front of the camera.

With pre shoots or engagement shoots the idea is the photographer and the couple get to know each other on a more intimate level. For the couple they get to see their photographer in action and learn to be more comfortable in the front of the camera and for the photographer he or she gets to see how the couple interact, their behavoiour in front of the lens and how best to shoot them. The added bonus is you wind up the great photos which can be used as wedding invitations or save thedate!
