Expert Advice

As a wedding professional, Phoebe and the Night Creatures offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.

Can i ask for a dj or band's music sample before i book them?

Absolutely!!!!! You should also ask if you can go and see them play live too. Nothing like seeing them entertaining crowds, in the flesh! :)

Which goes first, the first dance or Father/Daughter dance? Thanks!

It's completely up to you, however for all the weddings we've done, the first dance usually comes first. Father daughter dance works really well as the first song in the next set. I wouldn't put it after the first dance - usually guests love to come and dance after the first dance, so if you do a second dance whereby the guests can't join in, it might lose momentum a bit... but it's completely up to you guys! :)

Help with my wedding music

Am really stuck for wedding music re cutting cake, bridal waltz etc

Hey! Were you thinking of using live music or recorded?

Do you have a band booked? If so, have you looked at their song list? You may find inspiration there!

If you're using a DJ or pre-recorded music, my advice would be to think about songs which are significant to you guys! :)

Good luck with it and if I can help out any more, let me know!

Should we have a band?

We are struggling to decide whether to have a band at our wedding reception. We have the option as it's a friend's band and it will be either free or greatly reduced in cost. Things to consider: - They play exactly my fiance's taste in music - It won't cost much - It will make the friend happy to be included - The friend is my boss - The style of music clashes significantly with our 1930s vintage theme (we are having guests dress to the theme and our venue is also vintage styled) - It's the opposite of my taste in music - Some guests will love it, some will hate it - They won't be able to play our first wedding dance song as that will be jazzy (but we can play this over speakers) What should we do?

As a vocalist with a band, who's also worked extensively with DJs, I agree - there are pros and cons in both - as Millenium Wedding DJs pointed out very well, I gotta admit! :) I've played at a bunch of weddings where the bride or groom have known someone who wanted to offer to play for them, but they wanted to book us as our style suited their vibe better. The best outcomes I've seen have been where the friend's band plays a set during pre dinner drinks - background music, to set the tone. Then you can do whatever you want during the reception! If you explain to them that you really want the 1930s theme for the reception but you'd love for them to be involved at the start, I'm sure they would understand! If I offered to help a friend out but they didn't want to book us because we didn't play their theme.... say, ska and punk music (two style we definitely don't cover in our repertoire!), I wouldn't be even remotely offended! As for getting a band vs DJ, to be honest, if you're going with a jazzy, 1930s theme, you really can't beat a band.... But if your budget didn't allow for one, maybe you could book a DJ who'd play jazz to begin with - to set the tone, and then launch into some more typical, party favourites later in the night? By the time everyone wants to dance, they'll want to up the ante. It's a pity you're in QLD because we could fit both styles easily! And some bands do - maybe have a hunt around and see if anyone can cover both jazz AND party stuff. Good luck with it! I'm sure it'll be amazing! :)

Will a wedding band or DJ act as an MC?

Just wondering whether it's common for wedding DJs to also act as an MC?

Sometimes! We get asked a lot, and my response it always the same.... we're happy to do small announcements once the band is on stage (i.e. calling last drinks, cabs, announcing the first dance, etc) however if you're after someone to MC the entire reception, we're more than happy to do it for a small, additional fee however I always always allllllways recommend thinking through your list of family and friends, and seeing if you have someone you know who loves the spotlight, and might be keen to help out. While we can ABSOLUTELY do the MC duties, I always find the personal nature of having someone who knows you guys really well, to be so much better. They can throw in little anecdotes about you as a couple, when they introduce speakers they can throw in little quips here and there... it makes things that little bit more special. :)

What makes a great wedding DJ/Band?

Flexibility, stage presence, professionalism, and the ability to create whatever vibe you guys are after! And first and foremost, the ability to read the crowd and play what they want to hear, and be flexible enough to change direction if need be. Musicianship helps too. ;)

What makes a great wedding DJ/Band? How important is experience?

It's super important!! Once the formalities are over, it's basically up to the band or DJ to create the vibe from that point onwards. They almost become the informal MC in a way.... running things once people hit the dancefloor. Whether you want it to be cruisey and classy, or an all-in party, with everyone on the dancefloor, it's up to them! Not only their song selection but their banter between songs, getting the guests involved... and most importantly, reading the crowd and playing music that THEY want to hear - not what the band wants to play! We've had some instances of having a setlist written out, finding the crowd wasn't digging a particular style we were playing, and us changing direction really quickly and rolling with something different, then having the dancefloor packed. Someone with less experience would probably just play the tunes they'd planned on playing, and have a "we're getting paid regardless" kinda attitude. A band or DJ who genuinely care about what they do, will do their best to make sure everyone has a great time - the more fun you guys have, the more fun WE have in turn! :)
