A celebrant is necessary as are two witnesses over 18 yr of age.  And of course, the bride and groom. Maybe a photographer?!

In a civil ceremony: a couple in love (you and your partner), a celebrant (me?), and 2 legal witnesses is all you need

All you need is a Celebrant, two witnesses and the bride and groom on the day of the wedding.  However, at least one month prior to the date of your marriage you will need to sign a Notice of Intended Marrage.  The rest of the paperwork can be signed on the day - the Declaration of No Legal Impediment prior to the ceremony and the rest after the Ceremony has been conducted.

  • A correctly completed Notice of Intended Marriage received by an authorised celebrant no earlier than 18 months before and no later than one month before the wedding
  • A declaration of no impediment to marriage signed by both parties prior to the start of the ceremony in the presence of the celebrant
  • An authorised celebrant, ceremony structure and wording according to Australian law

You need to speak to a celebrant who can guide you through all the legalities and make sure your marriage will be valid - best wishes!

Hi

You need your celebrant who will guide you through  the requirements.

First you will need to complete the Notice of Intended Marriage a minimum of 1 calendar month before the wedding or the maximum of 18 months before the wedding. The Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage form also must be completed and signed close to the wedding date. The celebrant witnesses these.

The celebrant develops a simple ceremony with the mandatory monitum and legal vows and the signing and witnessing of the marriage certificates.

To have a wedding you need to find who you would like to marry you. They will guide you on what is required to get to the wedding. Things that you need is birth certicate, Photo ID and to fill in the Notice of Intended marriage and the Celebrant can help you organise everything else.

For a wedding to be a legal marriage, you need to be over 18 years (one can be 16-17, but need a court order and parental permission), have an Authorised Celebrant who says the necessary legal words and the couple say the necessary legal vows, two witnesses who are over 18 years to witness the ceremony and the signing of the marriage documents. The celebrant needs to then declare the couple husband and wife. One month prior to the ceremony, the couple need to have completed the Notice of Intended Marriage with the celebrant, sign it and have it witnessed by them.  The ceremony can have extra parts added to personalize the ceremony for the couple.

That''s the first step! Then you need to approach a celebrant to help you complete a Notice of Intended Marriage. This must be completed at least one month before the intended date of the marriage. After that you can work out all the details. Again a celebrant can help with this.
