In Australia, you can’t actually officiate your own wedding—even if you’re a registered celebrant. The Marriage Act 1961 says an independent, authorised celebrant has to be the one to perform the ceremony and handle the legal stuff.

That said, the best thing about working with a celebrant is that you still get to be really involved in shaping your ceremony. From helping write the script to sharing your love story and adding personal touches, you’ll feel completely part of the process—while your celebrant makes sure everything is legal and official.

What an interesting question, but alas no you cannot.  You do need to have 5 people for a legal wedding. The couple getting married, an authorised celebrant and two witnesses.   Enjoy your wedding as part of the couple, it is a beautiful and moving celebration of you both,

A very quick and short answer is no a registered MarriageCelebrant can not officiate their own wedding.

No, you cannot become a marriage celebrant specifically to officiate your own wedding in Australia. Celebrants are legally prohibited from solemnizing their own marriages. This creates a clear conflict of interest and violates the legal requirement for an independent third party to officiate.

A Marriage Celebrant cannot officate their own wedding. A legal marriage ceremony requires 5 people: an Authorised Marriage Celebrants, the couple getting married and 2 witnessess.

Interesting question.

One you already know the answer to.

It sounds like you want to be different so you could consider Our friend Stanley's answer. It's definitely outside the box & I quite like it. Just remember not to heap too much stress on yourself. You want your ceremony to be memorable or all the right reasons. You should enjoy it.

Your wedding ceremony is going to be very special because it is about you & your partner.

What is it about you guys that you want to celebrate?

Start from there.

The simple answer and most direct answer is No. The best way to explain it would be 'conflict of interest'. You can't marry yourself.

Hello! Thats a great question and one I get asked all the time - the short answer is no, because you need to be married infront of an Authorised Marriage celebrant and two witnesses over the age of 18 for it be legally bound.

So yep, you’ve got to hand the mic to someone else for that one! x
