What else do you need to know about David:

Q. How would you describe your wedding ceremony presentation style?

A. Confident.  I studied voice at acting school and as a singer I know how to handle a microphone.  I am comfortable being the centre of attention and can be heard clearly without a microphone, although I usually use my PA system to ensure the couple can be heard clearly.

Q. Do you specialise in a particular ceremony style or ritual?

A. No, however, I can perform secular ceremonies and am happy to incorporate elements from other cultures.  I am familiar with many cultural traditions, including handfasting and am always interested to learn about other culrures.

Q. Do you offer to help couples write their wedding vows?

A. Yes, however I remind them that it's an opportunity to express what they mean to each other in their own words and the more personal their vows are the more it adds to the occasion.  I tell them to just say what they feel and if they need me to craft it into a form of words I can help them.

Q. Can you share one or two wedding ceremony readings you like to recommend to couples?

A. Off the top of my head, 1 Corithians 13 is good for people with a church background; I also like Shakespeare's Sonnet 116.  Here's one that I wrote myself :

____________________________________________________________________________

It is often said that love is constant, but how can that be?  Love is many things.  It is strong, but tender; it is all-consuming, but gentle; it is passionate, but unhurried.

A life together consists of countless moments, some joyous, some challenging.  A relationship must encompass all these moments.  What endures is the commitment to face them together as one, holding each other above all else, come what may.

Relationships must be like trees in a forest, one must accept them for what they are here and now.  Just as a tree grows with the sunshine, wind and rain, sprouting new branches and leaves but with roots firmly anchored to the earth, so a relationship grows amid the noisy confusion of life, adapting to circumstance but remaining anchored in love and respect.

Q. What equipment will you bring (or require the couple to provide) on the wedding day?

A. I can provide a top-of-the-range Mipro sound system, signing table and chairs and even live music if required.  The prices are set out in my schedule of fees.

Q. What’s the best review you’ve ever received from a couple?

A. They are all good, but I particularly appreciated this one. "David has been a wonderful Celebrant. He was super accommodative and made the whole process much easier and more manageable than we initially thought. We had a small elopement and David was also understanding of this as well, tailoring the ceremony to fit exactly what we need. He is very open to discussion and prompt in answering our questions which just made it so much more reassuring. " Son L, 12 March 2021

Q. What packages do you offer and are there any additional fees?

$330   Elopement special.  You and your partner, 2 witnesses and photographer.

$440   Basic ceremony with vows selected from a list of alternatives and exchange of rings if required and a rehearsal if requested.

Extras:

$220  Peronalised ceremony with readings, personalised vows, rituals, music  etc.

$90    Signing table and chairs (I find most couples bring their own or use the facilities at the venue).

$60    Registry copy of Marriage Certificate (this charge is levied by the Registry - I pay it on your behalf)

I also offer live music.  I am a musician and I know lots of musicians.   Price depends on exactly what you want.

Q. What else would you like couples to know about what you do?

A. The recurrent theme in my reviews is how I set people at ease, explain things clearly and make the whole process fun and relaxing so that everyone can enjoy the occasion.

FAQ

I sit with them, explain highlights of the process and ask if they have any questions.  I always send my price list when responding to an enquiry so I assume they are OK with the fees before we get together.  Then I fill on the NOIM with them and make sure the documents are in order. If they have opted for the full service ceremony I ask them what sort of ceremony they would like.  I prompt them with possible inclusions like readings, music, handfasting etc.  I ask them to think about what they want to say in their vows.  I explain that it's their opportunity to tell each other how they feel 'from the heart' but I add that I can suggest some alternatives if they would like.  Within a few days I email them a draft of the ceremony for approval.  They can make changes and add things.  If they have not written their vows yet, the draft will contain alternative vows that they can select or use as a basis for their own vows.  When they have finalised their vows I send them a final copy of the script for approval.

Yes.  I always have a 'bare bones' ceremony with me when I first meet the couple.  I explain what this is

More often a week before, because people are usually too busy the day before.

David was a great celebrant. He was very flexible, well-organised, honest and merry. He suggested a few interesting ideas to the ceremony, helped us to have a rehearsal and even agreed to play the live music for us. He was very supportive and patient with us, and created just the relaxed atmosphere we wanted for our wedding. We’re thinking of hiring him again for our next wedding ;-)

Should we have signs at our ceremony to leave the front row vacant for immediate family?

I was thinking maybe this is tacky, but then maybe it's necessary. (Or am I really just overthinking it?) Someone suggested that this is the role of the celebrant - to ensure that it's family in the first row. Is that generally true?

David Nettle Civil Marriage Celebrant

Yes, it's your wedding so you can say who sits where and reserving seats for your family is fine.  In fact, it's the best way to ensure the fromt row is full.  Best to put actual names rather than 'Reserved for Family', otherwise some relatives aren't sure whether you consider them family or not.  As with all things like this, talk to your celebrant who will have encountered this before and can advise you how to go about reserving seats without offending any of your guests.
