What formalwear would look good with a floral wedding dress?

The base is still ivory, but it had pinks, purples and through it. Its the Wendy Makin Couture Katelyn.

Hi Katelyn,

With the colours that you have mentioned, we would reccommend something in the shade of blue, and perhaps some accents in the colour to complement the ivory, pinks and purples. Keeping the outfits quiet elegant and sharp and bring in the story with the accessories of pocket square, tie, bow-tie etc. If you are getting the dress made, then simply ask the maker to order a bit more fabric and you can create the tie, bow-tie, pocket square with the exact fabric, this is something we have done recently for one of our clients. It looked amazing.

Keep note of the theme of the wedding and the style of attire that is needed to make sure you both complement each other well.  If the the dress has a relaxed feel in terms of it style and movement, pick an outfit style for him that works well with the dress, i.e if you go super formal it will look out of place and will take away from its shine. Beside just the colour these other elements can also make or break the final result.

If you need your man to connect with us, for his wedding style and for his groomsmen please feel free to connect via a message or even give us a call and will be happy to assist with a few ideas, our extensive menswear knowledge means we are able to source custom made items or off the rack clothing depending on your budget and the body shape of the groom and groomsmen.

Wishing you every blessing for your special day!

Thanks,

Firstly, what an amazing dress. I love the design.

I would recommend styling the suits based on the bridesmaids dresses. My initial feeling is a range of blue suits things in the Marine and Navy shades, even Dark Teal's if they are available. Most bridesmaids colours will complement the blues but I would hesistate to recommend this colour if the bridesmaids are navy. Based on your dress, I would think the girls are in lilacs, nudes or baby pinks, if so, then my original recommendation stands.

Accessorising should be kept to a minimum, as the focus should be your dress. I would style the boys in suits with vests in the matching blue (I would highly recommend a shade of Navy), and then finding matching bows for the groomsmen to the bridesmaids colour, and seeing if you can get a floral bowtie for the groom to match your dress.

I would recommend with your dress aiming for understated elegance for the boys. Matching 3 piece suits without too much 'trimmings' optional dark brown shoes would look nicer than black shoes. Speak to your suit store, they should be able to understand the necessity to provide balance with the boys outfits (Using Navy to contrast against the girls dresses is what I am trying for). With a dress like yours, the photo's are of utmost importance, but also creating spectacle through contrast (Boys dark, girls 'stand up' off the boys)

I hope this styling advice is useful.

Feel free to clarify further with me if you are unsure

Hey Katelyn,

In short; accessories.

Suits are predominantly only available in a set number of base colours; black, navy, charcoal, light grey/silver, blue and beige (brown is incredibly out of fashion right now, so don't even consider it).

With an ivory base to the dress, the groom and groomsmen should have an ivory/off-white shirt as a crisp white will make the dress look aged or dirty.

Accessories like ties, pocket squares and boutonnieres will help keep the colour scheme consistent and offers you a lot of flexibility on how formal you decide your wedding should be.

In this case, I'd start by selecting a tie that has colours that match your dress. Floral and paisley prints are usually going to have two or more colours in them, so this might not be a bad angle for complimenting the dress. This is your "core" or "feature" item, and will help dictate the rest of the outfit.

We have already established that you should have an ivory shirt, so we can check that off. Almost everything works on ivory as white, so you should be in the clear. But, always make sure you're happy with the combination!

Next, pick a suit. Since your dress sounds exciting and visiually striking, then I'd perhaps recommend a blue of some description like somewhere between a powder and electric blue. Charcoal is a great all-rounder colour as well, and will add more visual impact to the colourful accessories.

Shoes and belts should match, and should be based on the suit rather than the core item. Black is always safe, but brown shoes should be chosen for lighter greys and navy/blues. Alternatively, you can also go with a pair of suspenders for extra colour if you can't find a tie that is 100% capturing the colours in your dress.

Everything else - socks, cufflinks, etc - should also match the colour scheme that you have selected should you choose. Otherwise they're "free space" items where the groom can let some personality come through.

Hope this helps!

you cant go past a sharp black tuxedo this is as formal as you can get i would consider the corsage or the tie to match in with the floral dress we can also sugges blue and charcoal we would have to have a close look at your reds and pinks.

It would depend upon how much of the pinks and purples are in your wedding dress. Most suitss will go with your dress if there is only a small amount of the colour you have explained. The best option would be to get a sample from Wendy Makin and bring it along when your fiancee is trying the suits on to make sure the colours tone in. Without seeing the fabric i would say that, navy, charcoal, black, light grey and french blue would be ideal.
