What can the Groom wear for a summer wedding?

We're getting married in February in Brisbane and it's very likely to be hot and sticky. Now, I want my fiance to look sharp, but I don't want him to suffer either. What do you suggest he wear? (Don't worry about best man or groomsmen, we're not having any.) It's a garden ceremony in the shade, and the bride is wearing a simple tea-length dress, if that makes a difference.

Hi Sarah

My favourite for humid climates is linen or linen/cotton mix. If you dont mind a little wrinkling (adds a casual/bohemian look) then these fibres are the most breathable and comfortable in hot climates. A sportsjacket made from these cloths offer the structured look without sharp corperate silhouette.

You should avoid a lined jacket, as most will be in polyester, otherwise look for 'Bemberg' lining wich has better breathability. This will be a very important aspect of the garment and comfort for your fiance :)

From there any cotton chino or wool trouser would be fine with a cotton or linen shirt.

Best of luck!

Regards

A summer wedding in Brisbane means heat and humidity, so your fiancé’s suit should balance style, comfort, and breathability while still looking sharp. Here’s what we’d recommend:

1. Lightweight Fabrics for Comfort

  • Linen blend or cotton suits – These are breathable and lightweight, helping to keep cool while maintaining a polished look.
  • Wool-blend suits – A light, unlined wool-blend suit can also work well, as wool naturally wicks away moisture.
  • Ditch the full lining – Opt for a suit with minimal or half-lining to allow better airflow.

2. Suit Colour for a Fresh, Summer Look

  • Light beige, sand, or taupe – Perfect for an outdoor garden wedding, giving a relaxed yet elegant feel.
  • Soft blue or dusty grey – A light alternative that still looks formal but won’t feel as heavy as darker tones.
  • White or ivory linen – A stylish option that pairs well with your tea-length dress while keeping it classic.

3. Styling to Beat the Heat

  • Ditch the tie – A well-tailored open-collar shirt looks effortlessly refined for a summer wedding.
  • Breathable shirt fabric – A cotton or linen dress shirt will help with sweat control.
  • Lighter shoes – Brown loafers or derby shoes (rather than heavy black leather) will keep things cool and stylish.

Final Touch: Accessories for a Polished Look

  • A pocket square or light vest (instead of a tie) can add personality without excess layers.
  • A straw fedora or Panama hat could be a fun, stylish addition for sun protection.

With a garden ceremony and a bride in a tea-length dress, a lighter, more relaxed suit will complement the overall aesthetic beautifully.

Hi Sarah,

A few things to consider, making sure that the groom and bride are consistent with their look/theme of style, this is important so that you both look beautiful and consistent on your wedding day, and all the photos and memories.

In terms of warm/humid climates breathability is key, hence focus on naturals. Since you are wearing an elegant and simple tea length dress, watch the drape of the dress, and match this to the fabrics you choose. i.e if the dress is sharp, look for cool wools that drape well and has a sharp silhouetter, or if the dress has a organza sort of feel then look for something in the linnen/cotton blends. But stick to naturals.

If you are purchasing a natural fabric, make sure that even the linning is a natural fabric to allow air flow through out the garment to your body. It does not make sense to invest in a natural outter fabric and then get polyester linning.

Okay next question perhaps that is in your mind is pricing and lead times? You could achieve a made to measure suit, customised to the grooms body in perhaps a sand or a neutral summer colour for around $699 upwards,  including all alterations, it takes around 4-6 weeks to turnaround a made to measure suit.

Most of our couples we cater for are getting married in spring or summer and the advise we give them is to simply avoid wearing synthetic or blended fabrics.

For warmer months natural fibres work best. Light wools for most suits or alternatively for a more relaxed look cotton or linen will provide the best comfort.

If your opting for a suit jacket always ask for Half canvas or full canvas construction.  This traditional tailoring craft will ensure you are at your most comfortable.

Hi Sarah

Best to wear a nice cool wool suit, and an good quality white cotton shirt.

Tie is optional, depends how formal you want the groom to look.

Avoid Polyviscose.

Hope this is of help

Kind regards

Hi Sarah,

This is quite a subjective question but based on your specific information, I would suggest the following;

A nice Pure-wool sportscoat (possibly blue of some description, or a fashion colour) with (complimentary) chino's, possibly a white linen shirt and tie, or coloured linen shirt and no tie. This outfit will compliment the casual nature of the bridal dress, and tone with the garden setting. Also, the fabrics are naturals so he should not "suffer".

Hope this helps,

Matthew (and the Team)
