The classic tale of high-school sweethearts finally getting hitched never gets old – and the wedding of Emma Back and Sam Lefroy was exactly that.
It was Emma who first popped the question to Sam in Year 11; “Will you go out with me?” and 10 years later Sam proposed right back over dinner on a memorable holiday to Phuket, Thailand.
Eighty-six guests were invited to witness the garden ceremony at Bunker Bay’s Pullman Resort, followed by a sit-down reception in the venue’s Windmills Room.
The pair, both 27 on their wedding day, had often celebrated birthdays and special occasions at the location and it was Emma’s dream to marry there. “It was so surreal when I actually walked down the aisle,” she says.
Emma’s background in interior design inspired her to create a romantic vintage wedding, with a vision of soft colour, hearts, flowers and vintage furniture. She enlisted the help of her mum who went above and beyond when she pulled an all-nighter a few days before the wedding to sew together hundreds of hand-cut love hearts.
At the reception guests enjoyed a photobooth to create lasting memories for Emma and Sam. “Our guests were lining up to have their photos taken,” recalls Emma, “even our grandparents got into the spirit and enjoyed the funny props and costumes.”
On their return from an amazing Phuket honeymoon, Emma and Sam’s post-holiday blues were short-lived when they walked into a lounge room full of beautifully wrapped gift registry presents. “We couldn’t believe how spoilt we were,” says Emma. “It was like Christmas x 1000!”
Emma’s vintage-look tulle and lace Tuscany Bridal gown was responsible for inspiring the wedding theme, romantic vintage. “I also found a gorgeous pearl and crystal-encrusted belt to add another dimension,” says Emma.
The bouquet was an array of many types of flowers in watercolour tones of soft pinks, peaches, lilacs, creams, whites and silvery blues. “A lot of my favourite flowers were out of season in March,” says Emma, “but my fantastic florist Sarah was able to source the most beautiful big blooms to still achieve the same effect.”
Emma was a DIY queen for her special day. “With my background as an interior designer, I had a very clear vision of what I wanted for our wedding decor,” she says. The focus piece was love-heart bunting hung from the ceiling. Pieces of vintage furniture were hired, including two white Tiffany chairs and a white leather button-back armchair to use in photographs.
Emma and Sam’s lolly bar was a huge hit with their guests. Pastel colours were chosen with silver and crystal to tie in with the wedding theme.
“I just love everything about Sam,” says Emma. “He is so caring and sweet, he always thinks of me and best of all he really knows how to make me laugh.” Sam says, “Emma is amazing. So beautiful – inside and out.”
“Words just can’t express how happy we are with what Ben Yew [photographer] has done for us, transforming our memories into absolute works of art,” praises Emma.
“I’d highly recommend finding a wedding venue where you can have the ceremony, photos and reception all in one place, especially where guests can also stay,” advises Emma. “It created a really nice weekend getaway for everyone and they seemed to all be very relaxed and ready for a good time.”
