A cocktail wedding at Sydney’s Killara Golf Club: Venny & Patrick

By: /Updated on: March 16, 2022

Today’s wedding was posted to our site some time ago but I wanted to re-feature it as the photos are gorgeous and photographer Anna Zhu did an amazing job at capturing the emotion of the day.

Sydney lovebirds – school teacher Venny and town planner Patrick – will celebrate their two year wedding anniversary later this year. Has life changed since tying the knot on 20th August, 2011? Venny tells me that it hasn’t really – that the pair lived together for over a year prior to getting married. She adds however, “It still is a little bit of a kick to refer to [Patrick as] ‘my husband’.”

The prestigious Killara Golf Club was the venue for the couple’s afternoon nuptials and cocktail wedding reception of 210 people. “We wanted a simple no fuss wedding where everyone could talk, mingle and have as much fun as possible,” explains the bride. Which from the look of these photos, I think they achieved.

After a long search for her wedding gown – almost a year – Venny found her gorgeous beaded lace gown at Park Avenue Bridal in Sydney’s west. Like so many other brides discover, she says, “I had an idea for my dress and ended up with something quite different!”

She accessorised with a single-tier cathedral veil and gold and pearl headpiece, necklace and earrings. Venny’s bridesmaids wore beige, one-shoulder full length dresses from Forcast, with ivory pashminas as shawls.

A dark blue Jack London three-piece lounge suit with white shirt and gold tie was worn by the groom. The groomsmen co-ordinated with light grey Ben Sherman suits, white shirts and black skinny ties. Each of the boys wore a single champagne rose boutonniere on their lapel.

Venny tells, “We had our ceremony on the balcony… [which] was decorated with floral arrangements and an ivory carpet scattered with rose petals. She adds, “Luckily the torrential rain that led up to the day had disappeared and it was sunny.”

On celebrant Pamela Floyd she praises, “Pamela was excellent and took the time to… provide a ceremony that was tailored to what we wanted. She was also very prepared and did a wonderful job on the day.”

“The golf course provided all the greenery and views necessary,” says Venny.

The wedding cake was from Brides in Bloom and was marble-mud flavoured with butter cream frosting. “The guests raved about this cake for weeks!” beams the bride.

Venny’s tips on planning a wedding: “The preparation for the day can be as simple or complex as you make it – don’t give yourself a million options, stick to two or three. Ask questions no matter how dumb you think they are. Decide which aspects are really important to you in the future and spend your money on those things.”
