Whether you’re a guest or the couple, one thing that is plentiful at most weddings is alcohol. But as weddings become more of a multi-day event, we need to know how to avoid the wedding hangover.

Wedding just around the corner? It’s an exciting time! If you’re a guest or the couple, you’ve normally got a few days in a row of celebrations. From welcome drinks (hello, first night fever!) through to the recovery day, which is now becoming more of a festival, weddings are a marathon, not a sprint. But it is an exciting time and often a reunion of friends or family. That means overindulgence is on the menu.

If you’re the couple who’re clinking glasses with every guest and drinking to many toasts in your honour, or a guest who thought they could bypass the old rule of not mixing champagne with red wine and, oof, was that an espresso martini? Weddings are a breeding ground for next-day regret.

Sure, there’s the age-old anti-hangover cure of a water dispersed between each drink but who’s counting? If you’re more of an agent of chaos rather than the spiritual advisor of the group, we know you might need a bit more support when it comes to the ‘morning after’. We’ve scoured the internet and found some of our favourite unhinged tips for survival.

Here are 7 completely unhinged tips to avoid (or at the very least survive) the wedding hangover.

Shots of… Pickle juice?

It’s a love it or loathe it kind of food, but if you can stomach pickles, you might find solace in the juice! This Life Pro Tip promises that pickle juice is “better than Gatorade”. The brine apparently replenishes your sodium and tricks your body into forgiving you. Our Life Pro Tip: take the pickle juice without the accompanying martini or you might find yourself horizontal a little longer.

Carbs at 2AM

TikToker Mads, aka cripanddip has made a name for herself by creating delicious recipes on the basis of “carbs before drinking are a must”. And although this is definitely true, we also think that carbs during the night out are also a must.

“The drunker the carb, the lighter the hangover,” claims on fiery Redditor. Translation: order that Uber Eats before you start dancing on tables. Cold pizza, leftover garlic bread, or the couple’s untouched wedding cake slice? All acceptable hangover shields.

Show some loyalty!

Everyone knows that loyalty is a great personal trait to have, but it’s even better for you when you show it to your drinks! That’s right, pick your poison and stick to it. “Champagne or whiskey, not both, unless you enjoy medical drama”. So, when it comes to the open bar, pick a lane and stay in it.

Coconut water

Struggling to down lukewarm water that’s been sitting on the table for hours by now? Well, spice it up a little. Coconut water is an ideal substitute. It’s just as hydrating, has some sugars, and, well, it’s delicious.

Pro tip: If you’re a couple, provide personalised coconut waters as party favours as encouragement for your guests to keep up the H2o.

Dance like nobody’s watching

It’s a wedding so dancing is almost guaranteed to be on the cards. Although it might not be backed by science, or research, we think that a good ol’ boogie to some old classics will sweat out some of the sins.

So when you hear that first bit of Earth, Wind and Fire, it’s time to jump up from your seat and show your loved ones your best moves.

Hair of the dog

Look, it’s not the most unhinged of tips because it’s a tale as old as time, but if you’re wanting the party to continue at the recovery, a cheeky Bloody Mary could be a life vest. It’s not about cancelling the hangover altogether but if you can ward it off for one more day, that’s all you’re looking for.

Sleep in your outfit

We can’t say we agree with this one Redditor, but it’s at tip we’ve never seen. One wild suggestion: don’t fight it, just pass out in your wedding attire. “I woke up in my tux but avoided the hangover because I was too stressed about dry cleaning bills to feel sick.” Not medically accurate, but definitely entertaining.

Hangover kits at the ready!

If you’re the couple and you’re wanting to keep the celebration going, think about creating some hangover kits for your guests! It could include some mini bottles of water, painkillers, mints, and maybe even a cheeky eye mask or instant coffee sachet — all bundled up like a survival pack for the morning after.

It’s a playful way of saying, “We know you’ll go too hard… and we support you.”

Hangovers are a rite of passage at weddings, but remember — nothing kills the romance of the big day faster than a cracking headache and having to skip out on the next day’s festivities.

Drink water, eat something greasy, and when all else fails, accept your fate.
