Photography was always a hobby for me! Years ago, I shot a wedding for a friend, and because everyone knows everyone in Adelaide, it snowballed from there. Within 18 months, I had to quit my full-time job to shoot weddings.
We love your candid approach to wedding photography and beautiful, naturally lit images. How do you usually describe your style to couples who aren’t familiar with your work?
I’d describe my photography style as fun and personal. I love to get amongst it and enjoy the day with people, almost as if I were a wedding guest. This is the best way to capture those candid, unplanned moments.
What’s your approach to a wedding, starting from when you first meet the couple?
Creating the right atmosphere is step number one of capturing great wedding photos. I work pretty consciously toward creating an atmosphere where the couple can relax, have fun with the wedding party, and enjoy a few intimate moments to themselves in front of the camera.
Spending a reasonable chunk of time in the morning chilling with both sides of the wedding party as they get ready is essential to getting the feel of the day right. After a relaxed brew with the boys and a glass of bubbly with the girls, the dynamics of our group shift towards me being part of the wedding party, which leads to more natural, genuine photos.
This is one of the reasons I really enjoy shooting full-length wedding days. I don’t start early because I’m a massive fan of staged photos of guys straightening ties in the mirror, but I do love documenting a bunch of friends sharing a meal and having a great time together.
In the afternoon, there’s a time to feed the fun, crazy energy of a wedding party and a time to take the couple away from the crazy and give them the space to enjoy a few intimate moments together. I work with the flow of the day instead of against it because it not only makes your day more enjoyable but it leads to more authentic, vibrant wedding photography too.
Read James' Glowing ReviewsWhat’s your favourite style of wedding to photograph? Why?
As long as a wedding is a true reflection of the couple and their personalities, it doesn’t really bother me what style it is! Weddings that match the couple’s vibe always work best, no matter what style that ends in.
What advice do you give to clients who don’t feel overly comfortable being in front of the camera?
Make sure you get on well with your photographer. I start earlier than most photographers, so I have time for a glass of champagne with the girls and beer with the boys to help make a connection with the wedding party. Building this relationship makes a huge difference to the vibe of the photo-capturing process.
Enjoying your day and stressing less about the photos will help you achieve more natural shots that are true to you!
