OVERVIEW

The Mint is a time capsule in the centre of it all. Known to be Sydney’s oldest public building, Museums of History NSW has preserved the property to take you on a journey back to a bygone era. It’s a timeless museum wedding venue where your love story can become the next chapter of its rich history.

The Mint includes three award-winning event spaces for your wedding day, two of which are located outside for the ultimate alfresco atmosphere. Couples are instantly drawn to the Sandstone Courtyard for its rustic pave stones and arched walkways which make a gorgeous backdrop to ceremonies and wedding photographs. The raised lawn introduces a refreshing green oasis that contrasts to the cooling stone setting. Long banqueting tables below festoon lights make a spellbinding scene for a dinner under the stars.

If you need a wet weather option, a stylish glass bar runs along the side of the Sandstone Courtyard for pre-dinner drinks and canapes. Your guests can then be led into the Gold Melting Room for an a la carte meal by the highly regarded Pearl Catering team. This is the largest function space on offer with state-of-the-art technology and an architecturally-designed curved wooden ceiling. It’s an inspiring example of how the venue seamlessly blends the old with the new.

Top three things you’ll love about your Mint wedding:

  • The History. The Mint is the oldest surviving public building in Sydney that has housed a hospital and London’s first overseas branch of the Royal Mint. Museums of History NSW has immaculately updated its heritage details with attractive contemporary finishes.
  • The Versatility. The Mint has three desirable and flexible spaces for weddings, including a raised lawn, a sandstone courtyard and the Gold Melting Room inside. The dedicated events team would be delighted to discuss your plans and create a suitable event flow.
  • Photo Opportunities. You will never fall short of photo opportunities at The Mint. The historic Juliet balcony provides a picturesque moment and the way the light falls on the stone creates a warm flattering tone to every image. It’s a photographer’s paradise.

Choose from 3 Mint wedding ceremony and reception spots:

  • The Sandstone Courtyard is an open-air terrace surrounded by historic sandstone walls. The raised lawn sits at the centre, next to the stylish glass bar along one side.
  • The Raised Lawn injects a vibrant slice of green at the venue for outdoor wedding ceremonies, cocktail parties and banquets encircled by historical architectural features.
  • Gold Melting Room features contemporary elements of glass, timber and an attractive curved ceiling. It has direct access to the sandstone courtyard (100 dining, 250 standing)

FAQ

There are two ceremony locations, on either the Raised Lawn or Sandstone Courtyard (in front of the arches). While the site is closed on the weekends, for weekday weddings the site is open to the public, and we offer a partially exclusive hire of a specific area of the site.

A wet weather call will be made at the start of your booking time. The wet weather back-up is the Gold Melting Room or the Bar area (for smaller groups).

There are two reception locations, either the Raised Lawn or the Gold Melting Room. Should you be holding both your ceremony and reception at the Mint, we cannot accommodate both ceremony and reception on the lawn, should you choose to have a lawn reception, the ceremony would be held on the Sandstone Courtyard.

Please note the venue does not supply a photographer. Wedding photography is available in internal and external public areas of the site as guided by your Event Supervisor on the day (weekday weddings this may be limited as the site is open to the public).

For couples dreaming of a heritage setting with a contemporary wedding day, The Mint in Sydney delivers a memorable all‑in‑one experience. The moment you step onto the lawn and glimpse the sandstone courtyards and tree-lined backdrop, you feel the venue’s magical charm, and many couples report that it surpasses expectations in person. The real strength lies in the team: clear guidance from early planning, a dedicated coordinator who helps turn a vision into reality, and day‑of support that keeps things running smoothly, even with last‑minute requests. The staff present a polished, professional image that suits formal or relaxed celebrations, and guests repeatedly mention how friendly and helpful they were. The layout works beautifully—from ceremony on the grass to a reception in the elegant gold melting room, with the option to dance under the louvres and a separate bar space for a lively reception. Wet‑weather contingencies and parking add practical peace of mind. The main caveat reported is reliance on an on‑site caterer, with occasional quoting hiccups, but the overall experience remains exceptional and genuinely memorable for couples and guests alike.

October 2025

I just had my wedding here over the weekend. I am usually someone to gate keep and especially a private person who would prefer such a sentimental location to not get too popular but, after my experience and wanting other brides to be able to have the same amazing experience I had. I need to share! Now that I’m married, I’m trying to be the bigger better person and not gate keep. 🤭🤭 Rewinding back to when I had my venue inspections, we went to visit The Mint on a rainy day. I will say it was a horrible day to go to a wedding venue inspection. I still remember the conversation I had with my husband on the way there - “If we love it in this weather, then no question we will have to do it here.” And as soon as we stepped into the open lawn, we fell in love. 😍 The venue was soo beautiful and speaks for itself! We locked eyes and knew immediately this was going to be the venue. Initially thinking I won’t be able to have the cake and eat it too. If the venue was perfect I thought the staff won’t be supportive or be able to meet my expectations. But boy, was I wrong. I got the cake and got to eat every last crumb. 🎂 The venue support staff were all dressed in professional clothing on the day, as I have been to some weddings where staff just wore polo shirts. Our wedding being a formal cocktail, they not only dressed the part but looked stunning. I wont say who, but many guests asked if the staff were our friends and if they were potential bachelors 🤭🤭🤭 The support from Rebecca was out of this world. She not only set guidelines for me from the start and set my expectations - she still managed to work her magic to make sure my vision came to life. Without her help it would not have been so smooth sailing. As someone who likes to be organised and not like to go into situations cold, I was quite uncertain about many things. I’m sure for many brides it would be their first time and the uncertainty makes it immensely terrifying. However, the experience of Rebecca and her team just made it so reliable and easy. They gave me so much less to worry about. 🥰🥰🥰 Even up until the day of the wedding, she worked magic to make sure all the last minute requests and unexpected emergencies were taken care of! I can not recommend the venue enough! As you can imagine, my wedding was on Saturday so my professional photos aren’t out yet but here are some of our photos. We had our wedding ceremony on the lawn, korean paebek in front of the arches, reception in the gold melting room and dance floor was outside under the louvres. It was just magical. ✨✨✨ Whatever works for you but this was just a perfect use of the whole venue for us. Trust this review. Contact them and I hope you can be gifted the fairytale opportunity for your wedding too. 🥹🥹🥹 Thank you so much Rebecca, Niels and the whole MHNSW team. Not only the location but you all are my heroes that made my fairytale come true.

November 2024

The venue was absolutely spectacular - all our guests loved it. Assistance provided by our venue co-ordinator throughout our wedding planning process (over a period of 6-9 months) was amazing - always responding promptly and provided great advice based on their experience. They had everything setup perfectly on the day as well. Wet weather back-up option and parking available for the bridal party bonuses!

The setup was gorgeous. They made the gold melting room look beautiful for the lunch reception. Our event supervisor on the day, Bruno, was positive and solutions focused with any problems we encountered. The setting of the venue is quaint and magical with the courtyard, the sandstone, the lawn and the tree.

May 2025

We loved this venue. The scene, under the tree and in the sandstone courtyard, is just stunning. Rebecca (venue co-ordinator at the Mint) was fantastic to work with and the event ran very smoothly. We were very happy with this choice!

The venue was a beautiful heritage spot for us to hold our ceremony. Our event coordinator Rebecaa E, was very lovely to deal with. She was super knowledgeable, prompt with her communication and we felt that she generally cared about making sure our ceremony would run smoothly.

What are all the considerations we need for an outdoor wedding?

Hi there, we are considering an outdoor wedding. What are any pitfalls we'd need to prepare for, or ways in which outdoor weddings are handled differently to indoor ones?

The Mint

One of the most important aspects for booking an outdoor ceremony location is that you have a wet weather back-up option either at the same venue, or at an alternate venue. I suggest looking for venues that offer an included wet weather solution suitable for the number of guests you expect to attend, so you don't have to pay additional costs for a second back-up venue, or to hire a wet weather structure such as a marquee, which can add thousands to your budget.

Additionally, you want to consider season and temperatures, shade and position of the sun. If it's Summer, you want to have some shade, or be able to add some nice garden umbrellas to your set-up, and in Winter, you want to have an area where you can have sunshine, which will still be warming, if it's a cooler day.
The position of the sun, and time of year needs to be considered, so you don't end up planning a wedding where the couple end up being blinded by the sun, and can't see each other properly during this important moment (and all the photos are of you squinting), or guests are all facing the sun, and also can't enjoy watching the ceremony, and you are silhouetted again the brightness behind you.

Lastly, try to have the alter set in all shade or all sun, not dappled shade, so your photographer can get the best photos!
