i keep seeing people hire content takers as well how necessary is this?

As a photographer, I usually say no to content creators. Most photographers can do this also at the same time. Having too many bodies trying to capture the day can be very chaotic and overwhelming. If you're specifically requesting particular type of insta content, you can relay this to your photographer to also capture these moments. I do this for my own clients whether requested or not. Having little elements of the day captured in stories and reels is always fun to share with clients, along with their gallery.

Short answer: a content creator is a nice extra, not a necessity. Your photographer and videographer are already capturing everything that matters in proper, edited form, so the day will be beautifully documented whether or not there is a separate phone in the room. The thing a content taker really adds is speed and a casual vibe: vertical phone clips and a few stills you can post that same night or the next morning, while your gallery and film are still being lovingly edited.
So the honest question is not "do I need one" but "how badly do I want same day social content." If posting within 24 hours genuinely matters to you, a content creator earns their place. If you are happy to wait a little for the real thing, you almost certainly do not need one. We hand edit every photo and video in-house here, so nothing gets rushed or outsourced, and we will often send our couples a handful of sneak peek images soon after the wedding to tide them over.
One practical tip from years of shooting: if you do bring a content creator on, just make sure everyone knows who is leading. The photo and video team should call the key moments, ceremony, first dance, speeches, so you do not end up with two or three people crowding the same shot and an extra phone in the background of your hero images. A quick chat between us beforehand sorts that out completely.
If saving money is part of this, a lovely middle ground is to simply tell us the kind of fun, behind the scenes reels content you would love, and we will grab it for you throughout the day alongside the main coverage.
