You'll find some wonderful candid shooters down in Adelaide and across SA, so you're in a good spot. We're based up in Queensland rather than your area, but we do travel for weddings, and either way I'd rather give you something useful than just point you at a portfolio.

When you're looking specifically for candid and natural work, the word to watch out for is that almost everyone uses it, so the test is in how someone actually shoots. Flick through a few full galleries, not just the highlight reel, and look for real in-between moments: someone laughing mid-sentence, a dad wiping his eyes, kids running riot during the speeches. If every single frame is a posed, perfectly lit portrait, that photographer probably leans more traditional no matter what the bio says. Truly candid shooters tend to keep a little distance and use longer lenses so people forget they're there.

The other thing worth asking is who actually edits your photos. A natural look lives or dies in the edit, and consistency matters when half your day is unposed. We do every bit of our editing in-house and never send it offshore, so the feel you see in someone's portfolio is genuinely the feel you'll get back. Ask any photographer you shortlist whether they edit their own work, because it tells you a lot about whether the style you fell in love with is really theirs.

One last tip for SA: think about your light. A summer Adelaide afternoon can be harsh and bright, so a candid shooter who knows how to find shade or wait for that softer golden hour late in the day will make a real difference to how relaxed and natural everything looks. Happy to answer anything else even though we're a bit further north, and best of luck finding your person.
