Time in business is one signal, but on its own it tells you surprisingly little. Some of the best shooters going around have only had their own business name for a year or two, after years of second shooting weddings for established studios. What you actually want to know is how many full weddings they have photographed start to finish, not how long the ABN has existed. Ask them directly: how many weddings have you shot, and can I see two or three complete galleries from real weddings, not just the highlight reel.
The full gallery is the test that matters. Anyone can post ten gorgeous frames from a sunset on a perfect day. What you are checking for is consistency across the whole day, the dim ceremony room, the harsh midday light, the chaos of a dance floor. A photographer who handles those well, especially our bright Queensland sun and the quick drop into dusk, knows what they are doing regardless of how new the logo is.
Then cover yourself with the practical stuff: a signed contract, a clear deposit and refund policy, and a real answer to what happens if they are sick or have an emergency on the day. We carry backup gear, shoot to dual memory cards so nothing lives in one place, and have photographers we trust who can step in if something goes wrong. Ask whoever you book how they handle that. A confident, specific answer tells you more about reliability than any number of years.
One last thing worth asking anyone, new or established: who actually edits your photos. We edit every image and video in-house ourselves, never sent offshore or outsourced, so the look you fall in love with in their gallery is the look you will get. If you are happy with the work, the contract is solid and they answer the hard questions calmly, a newer studio can absolutely be the right choice.
Yes, most suppliers who are starting out in weddings bring expierences from similar fields accross with them into their new industry.
