Expert Advice

As a wedding professional, Gordon Jovic Photography offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.

What questions should you ask when searching for the right photographer?

Also legal to make sure you are covered, documents to watch for or enquire regarding booking what should the photographer give you to seal the deal.

How many years have they been in the industry and approximately how many weddings have they covered.
Aske they to show you a few wedding albums so that you can see how well they document the day with images. Good photographers don't just get a few good shots they tell the story of your day!

What are the newest trends in wedding photography?

All trends will date over time it's best to focus on natural imagery however, in recent years photo journalistic images have become more popular.

Around 10 years ago a lot of couples were asking for black and white images and then flowers in coulour. It was a trend back then (I hated it) :) if someone really wanted it I would give them a version like that but always knew it will go out of fashion.

It is important for the photographer to fully understand what kind of images their couple are wanting and he or she should adapt.

We can provide our best advice but ultimately it's their day and they have the last word.

Should wedding photographers have two cameras?

No they should have 3 or at least 2 plus a spare one in the car if they do not have an assistant to hold them.

Are two wedding photographers better than one?

It's always better to have one true professional with an asstant than 3x photographers that have little or no idea of what their doing.

Also, I am sure most people would rather have 500 stunning images than 3000 blury ones, under exposed, over exposed and simply not of good quality.

With weddings one should choose QUALITY over QUANTITY!

Can you explain why wedding photography is so expensive?

For good quality work there is more involved than one would think.

First of all a photographer will typically spend an hour with you when you meet, then another hour for pre wedding images, then processing. Plus 10-12 hours on your wedding day.

After the wedding it can easily take a full week or so to process your wedding well.

Good photographers process their images personally. Unfortunately, many cut corners and send files to India where they are batch processed. Make sure you ask your photographer WHO will process the files!

How much to a tip wedding photographer?

I'm American and my wedding is in Aus... I still want to tip. Advice?

If you are truly happy with their work just give them some praise.

I personally much prefer a compliment over money.

Tips are not expected. I have worked in the States and even over there tips are not expected.

can anyone be a wedding photographer?

Is there a course or training specific?

Basically YES!

Although, only very few can shoot a full wedding correctly and without errors.
This is why looking at a few of their albums is paramount.

Is there anything I can do if I don't like how my wedding photo's are edited?

Over the years I have had multiple Brides come crying to me asking if I could repair their images for them.

Unfortunately they chose another photographer and were focused on price rather than reputation.

No true professional will want to get involved with someone else's mess. disappointment is common!

The best way to avoid poorly edited images is to choose a quality photographer to start with.

But to answer the question you could ask them to use less affects and see if that helps. The problem is some photographer over process to eliminate their mistakes such as blur.

Qulaity over quantity is paramount.

whats the difference between cheap photographers and expensive ones?

like is it experience or talent or does it depend on if they are full time? I'm looking to spend between $2000-2500

Photography can be taught but having an eye for good imagery is a natural talent.

You either have it or you don't. I know I will kick up a stir by saying this but the truth is only around 10% of professional photographers in Sydney really have an eye for photography. Good photographers will agree with me I know.

When you book a photographer you are really booking him or her for their eye.

Equipment, software, websites anyone can have only few have an eye!

does the higher price in a wedding photographer mean better quality?

Generally yes but it's not always the case.
A really good photgrapher will typically cost more than someone new to the industry or someone that just doesnt have an eye.

Unfortunately, I have seen very average photographers list high prices on their websites which cannot be justified.

You'll need to see a few wedding albums to determin your decision but if someone is expensive you should be able to see why.

Does their work move you? look at expressions, body language, exposure and compesition.

If you're still not sure ask them how long they have been shooting and if they have won any meaningful awards.
