I love using the Fujifilm system as it makes photography feel more organic and brings with it the joy of capturing magical moments because the results look so good straight out of the camera,” says Colman.
“Oscar Colman is one of the most dedicated and talented photographers I have had the pleasure of working with. This man seeks perfection in his craft and gets it. 5 stars.” Lucas
Tell us about your process and packages.
Beginning with engagements, we talk with the couple to understand the most cherished things in their lives and in their relationship — whether it’s their favourite part of town or cafe, activities, places to go walking or drive to, and coordinate a shoot tailored to their connection to each other.
We suggest they bring a formal outfit and also something more relaxed, then we walk to a number of semi-planned shoot locations. It’s a lovely way to spend a few hours getting to know the couple as friends and let them become comfortable being photographed by us.
With traditional weddings, our packages are designed to include the moments that are most valued by the couple, regardless of budget. Starting from 5 hours of coverage with Oscar as the photographer, the basic package usually covers bridal party preparation, the ceremony, couple and wedding party portraits and the first hour of the reception.
The next packages are 8 and 12 hours respectively, including the second photographer and a start to finish coverage of the wedding day and ensures everyone attending has their time with the bride and groom, and not least the capturing of important parts such as speeches, dancing and cake! The full day packages also come with vouchers to use in the online print store so no matter what, there is a physical memento of the wedding.
In all our packages, the focus is delivering the best experience on the day as well as photographs to be cherished for decades to come by generations. The details we talk about before the wedding of what the couple really want to have are the best way to guide which package will be most suitable.
Do you offer engagement photoshoots or any other type of photoshoot before the wedding?
Absolutely, this is the best way for couples to get to know the way I shoot and also practice being in front of the camera. The majority of my packages include a 1-2 hour engagement session.
What’s the number one thing you recommend when couples are nervous in front of the camera?
I like to start off by doing something that feels natural to them, such as just holding hands and walking towards or away from the camera without directing them — that way they tend to warm up to the feeling of being photographed together, as it gives them something to do.
What else would you like couples to know about what you do?
While shooting candid most of the time, I give general directions to the wedding party before beginning to photograph certain stages of the day to ask the subjects to interact with each other naturally while keeping in the best available lighting and space available.
I also look to maximise the couple’s portrait time to include a wide variety of backgrounds and settings and encourage a more natural, romantic, intimate mood in the images. It’s a bit like go with the flow and minor prompts to make the most of the setting and light.
Do you usually work alone or with a second shooter and/or photography assistant?
As a photographer that built my portfolio as a second shooter, I really appreciate the value of having someone there to take photos from angles I can’t get to as the main photographer. It’s also very helpful to have someone to cover the parts of the day that happen in different locations — like when the bride and groom get ready separately, or during cocktail hour to capture candid images of the guests enjoying themselves while I’m shooting portraits.
More than that, as photographers always have backups of backups for equipment and data storage, a second photographer is a backup of the main photographer, so it’s peace of mind too. My second photographer is typically my partner Gabriela, she’s come with me to most weddings that book a second shooter. Gaby has an amazing eye for detail and sees unique moments I sometimes miss while photographing the main parts of the day.
“Oscar does an absolutely wonderful job and has fun doing it. He genuinely cares about producing the best work he can and in the future I wouldn't go to anyone by him!” Kat
