Expert Advice

As a wedding professional, West Coast Weddings offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.

Do I need two photographers for my wedding?

Hi there. My ceremony is at church in the morning and my reception is at 5pm in the city. Am I better off getting two separate photographers - one for getting ready + ceremony and one for the reception - to save on my budget? Or how does that work?

West Coast Weddings

Hi - as a professional wedding photographer/videographer we would absolutley recommend finding the person who's photography style and personality suit you and your wedding. You will be spending most of your day with them so its really important you feel comfortble with them. Hiring two different photographers  generally wont save you money (as most work on their minium hourly coverage), and you may end up with two very different styles to put into your wedding album that might not be in harmony with each other.

At West Coat Weddings we don't work on blocks of hours. All of our Collections (Packages) tell the whole love story of your day - getting ready, ceremony, portraits (on location if wanted) and the reception - which is where our coverge changes. Do you want just the first hour of it (Classic), all the formalities (Elegant), or there all night (Luxurious)? Obviously, with more coverage you get a bigger album and longer film included in your Collection. For most of our couples we would start around 10.00am and finish at night. If we are able to drone at the location, we would be up at sunrise! So even our Classic collection genrally gives at least 11 hours coverage for our couples.

Hope this helps answer your question.

What happens during a pre-wedding or engagement photo shoot?

I think an engagement shoot could be nice but I'd love to be more comfortable about what normally happens at one of these, obviously it's different to the wedding. I'm pretty awkward in front of the camera.

West Coast Weddings

At West Coast Weddings, we include a complimentary Engagment or Pre Wedding Shoot in ALL of our Collections (packages). Why? Because we want to share some of our expert "tips and tricks" to help you to get totally comfortable in front of the camera, so that on your wedding day it will come naturally and you can relax and have fun.  It also lets you get comfortable working with us so you know what you can expect on the day.

We offer you a choice of locations - Studio, Forest, Beach or Lake (or if you have somewhere else in mind we can accommodate for a small charge). We give you some information on how to prepare and what to wear. The shoot will generally take about an hour, and most of our couples choose a time that catches the beautiful and most flattering golden light. We put up a private online gallery for you to choose your favourite photo which we gift to you as an archival 8" x12" print. We also permit you to use this image for your "Save the Dates", Invitations or designing a guest books should you wish and give you a digitial copy.

Hope this is helpful to you, feel free to give me a call on 0412 562 832 if I can be of any further help to you. Karen

Do we get all the raw photos as well as the edited ones?

I was wondering whether it's normal to get two sets of photos, like, all the original ones and then the edited ones? Do we pick the ones to be edited or does the photographer do that?

West Coast Weddings

Most professional photographers will retain all copyright and artistic license over their images, so wont give you their RAWs. You are paying them for their professional expertise to edit your photographs - so that's what you get provided with professionally edited JPGs.

I explain it to my couples in this way, that in the "olden days" we took images on film and then developed them in a dark room, now we take digital RAWs that get developed in LIghtroom or Photoshop! RAW images can be flat and a bit dull to look at - that's why professional photographers have to do post processing to produce the gorgeous photographs that will grace your wedding album or walls of your home.

Hope this helps. Karen

What kind of photos would we need to be considered for a wedding blog or magazine?

I think it would be so amazing to get featured in a real wedding blog or magazine. Is there a list or style of photos I'd need to help us be in with a chance?

West Coast Weddings

At West Coast Weddings we feature "Real Wedding Blogs" on our website. However, for magazine submission you really need to have great light, great location, great looking couple and the time to be truly creative to get those "WOW" shots. Most weddings have a tight schedule and time is precious, so generally those awesine wedding magazine shots are what we call "Style Shoots" rather than able to be gained during a "real wedding". But if you really want it, have your photographer work it into your schedule and give them the time they need to WOW you!

How to decide on a wedding photographer

Hi. There are so many amazing wedding photographers out there, I'm getting decision anxiety. How do you know your photographer is the one for you? Thanks!

West Coast Weddings

Choosing your photographer is one of the most important decsions you can make. It really is a personal thing, the first step is to find images you love, then stalk that person (not in a creepy way - in an adoring fan kind of way). If you feel a connection with their style and personality arrange to meet with them - most professionals will do this obligation free at no cost. Don't get too hung up on pricing and packages - find the right person first!

I wrote a blog on this very topic ... hope it helps!

Is a wedding album worth it?

Not sure about this. Thinking we might just do our own wedding album online but then again, we're not very creative. And do all photographers do albums or would we be finding our own company for it?

West Coast Weddings

At West Coast Weddings we belive that LIFE BELONGS IN PRINT, and that YOUR love story deserves to be told! Because every love tory deserves a beautiful heirloom wedding album - we include a stunning handcrafted, bespoke artisan album in ALL of our Collections (Albums). These gorgous keepsakes showcase your wedding day to everyone and, being archival quality, will become family heirlooms to treasure, unlike digitals that can't easily be looked at, never get printed and can be tragically lost forever if the media corrupts or crashes. Your wedding day is such an important part of your family history that you will want those images printed and preserved for the generations to come!

Is it normal to pay photographers in full before the actual wedding day?

Just wondering if it is standard practice to pay vendors in full for services such as photography prior to the actual wedding day?

West Coast Weddings

Generally, most photographers will require a deposit to secure the date in their diary, with the balance paid sometime before the wedding (usually around 6 weeks out).

This way it means the "decks" are all clear on the day so to speak - so you don't have to worry about paying them on the day and can relax and enjoy the experience.
