Expert Advice

Why should you hire a professional photographer for your wedding?

Rod Noendeng Photography

How important are your wedding photos to you and your partner? If you said they are very important I would suggest a professional wedding photographer. You should keep in mind not all professional photographers are created equal. Real estate photographers may not be so good at wedding photography and a wedding photographer may struggle with real estate photography. I will list some of the pros and cons so you can decide what is best for you.

Some pros, not all.

  • They are professional
  • Help with planning your day
  • Has the experience to handle different conditions on the day
  • Is insured (just in case things don't go to plan)
  • Will have back up camera and lenses
  • Has backup copies of your photos
  • Is experienced at photographing weddings
  • Is good with people
  • not to mention creative skills photographing and editing

Some cons, again not all.

  • may cost a little more than uncle bob (the reason for that are listed in the list of pros)
  • many styles to choose from
  • finding a photographer you connect with (don't expect to like all the photographers you meet)
  • may be limited to the albums and prints they offer

I hope this has given you food for thought. I can definitely think of many more pros than cons. Don't leave capturing your special day to just anyone. Make sure you meet your potential photographer in a relaxed environment and get to know the actual person who will be photographing on the day.

Good luck and congratulations to you both, Rod

If I can't afford a wedding photographer, what should I do?

Should I approach a student? Or should I cut back in other areas?

Rod Noendeng Photography

This is a question that I've been asking before. You need to decide what's most important to you and your partner on your wedding day. There are some things which are a must such as makeup and hair, a wedding dress and a celebrant. What you spend on each will depend on your budget. However, if you want to have great photos of your day I would recommend a professional photographer. Firstly I suggest seeing if you can cut back on some of the other expenses to allow for a photographer. If you now have little to get a photographer on your wedding day there are a few options.
  • See if you can find a photographer who meets your new budget. There are good photographers who are just starting out and have very reasonable prices.
  • Check out the bridal expos. Photographers at these expos have great specials if you commit on the day. So be prepared to make a quick decision.
  • The photographer has a payment plan. Booking early with them could mean it is paid for before the wedding. There may also be a payment plan that will allow you paid off afterwards.
  • Maybe you can have only the ceremony photographed. This would be a couple of hours and should not cost as much as the whole day.
  • Have a chat to the photographer they may be able to offer you a custom package that may suit your budget.

If all that fails do you know someone who is a proficient photographer who would do it for you. Have your friends and family take photos at reception for you. However, remember a professional photographer does more than take good photos. They have experience and know how and when to make the most of the situations for the best photos. They also have back up equipment and insurance, as well as editing skills. I hope this helps a little with your wedding planning.

When should I start to think about hiring a photographer?

Rod Noendeng Photography

Most photographers will need a deposit and agreement to hold your weeding date for you. That doesn't mean you can't start looking for a photographer as soon as possible. You will find some photographers are happy to discuss your wedding needs and this is really good to help you with your planning. However, you do need your date set and your venue confirmed for that date if you are serious about hiring a photographer. I hope this helps with your wedding planning.

does the higher price in a wedding photographer mean better quality?

Rod Noendeng Photography

There is a photographer for almost all budgets. The can vary from very low to the other extreme. The question may be phrased a little differently to understand this price quality relationship. Firstly "better quality" - are you just wanting better quality images or better quality experience. A photographer provides you with more than images. You may get better quality images at all levels of pricing but what about the rest.

  • Customer focus - meeting with you and finding out exactly what you want.
  • Back up equipment in case things don't quite go as planned.
  • Don't forget insurance in case of mishaps.
  • Back up of your precious memories.
  • All the time spent in meeting with you and editing your photos.

Why does the photographer charge what he/she is charging?

There could be many reasons.

  • A new photographer may charge less because of less experience.
  • A very experienced photographer may charge more.
  • The photographer may not need to rely on the income from your wedding.
  • The photographer may not have the same business overheads. (backup equipment, insurance etc.)
  • The photographer may not offer albums or canvases.

At the end of the day you need to find a photographer

  • Look for photographers whose style you like.
  • Meet the photographer and make sure you get on well.
  • Check that the photographer's pricing meets your budget.

Happy planning!

how do i get everyone to line up so we can do the 'leaving reception' photo?

im stressing about the little things haha

Rod Noendeng Photography

Hi! Grab someone who knows most the guests and is not too shy. This could be a sister, a cousin or a good friend. Get them to organise the crowd and your MC to announce it. Just make sure your photographer knows what is happening. Especially where and when. By the end of the night everyone will be in a great mood and are looking forward to participate. All the best on your lovely day!

What are the benefits of having an engagement session with a photographer?

I noticed a lot have it as an added inclusion in some packages

Rod Noendeng Photography

Hi there, This is Rod.

There are advantages of having an engagement or couples shoot. The photographer may not be the one you choose for your wedding. The good things about having a engagement photography session:

  • You and your photographer get to know each other without the pressures that come with the wedding.
  • You will have some wonderful shots of you as a couple.
  • Most brides and grooms aren't always comfortable in front of the lens and this will help.
  • It can give you and the photographer additional insight into planning your wedding day shoot.
  • It can give you some extra confidence with your chosen photographer.
  • Overall this will help you and your photographer to be more relaxed when you are together.
  • Being relaxed in front of the camera will give more natural images.
When you have narrowed down to your final couple of photographers and if time permits you could have a couples session with these photographers before making the final choice. They may give you credit for the cost of the engagement shoot towards the wedding package if hired as the photographer. However in having these advantages there is no real need for an engagement shoot but it is good to get to know your photographer.
