Black Tie Events’ Mark Girdwood was there when it all started, DJing the inner Melbourne Pubs and Clubs after taking a break from his audio career at HSV 7, where he'd been working on variety TV shows, drama and on air presentation. Mark then branched into commercial radio, broadening his skills working both on-air and programming music. Mark’s 15 year on-air radio career included, amongst other great radio stations, Melbourne’s Hot Hit 3XY

Mark was fantastic as DJ / MC at our wedding. One of our biggest priorities was getting our 100 guests onto the dancefloor and having fun, and Mark did not disappoint! We had people dancing all night and multiple guests praising his excellent song choices for the crowd. He was also excellent as MC - he checked with us before every major milestone and managed the flow of the night extremely well. Cannot recommend Mark enough!!

We hired Mark from Black Tie Events to be our MC and DJ and we could not be happier. We had a mixed culture (Polish/Afghan) wedding and it was important for us that our day reflected the love and traditions from our two families. Mark was always professional, prompt with communication, respectful and inclusive of our wishes and cultures, and made this journey seamless and stress free. Mark was made to MC and his smooth and professional tone just shined on the night. On top of this, Mark's professionalism extended to coordinating with the venue and all other vendors, even smoothing out the hiccups along the way. The tailored approach to Mark's DJ work meant that we had carefully selected Afghan, Polish and English music to showcase the beauty of both our cultures, and our guests loved it. Both families and all our friends barely left the dancefloor. The love and spirit on the night was everything we hoped for and more! Thank you, Mark, for your incredible work in bringing our wedding vision to life!!

Mark was absolutely amazing, and really put in a lot of effort in the lead-up to our wedding and wanted to understand all of our music preferences from Rock, to country, to today's top hits, as well as provide dance request cards for guests also. He was very friendly, professional, and easy to deal with in the lead-up to the wedding. Mark was just so easy to deal with right from the beginning. As both our MC and DJ, Mark provided us with all the information we needed to make decisions about our big day, from the order of the events, to the music, to the speeches. Given we had a relatively small wedding of about 65 guests, our biggest concern was that people wouldn't dance or have fun. That was no problem with Mark in control as our guests had a great time on the dance floor and everything just ran so smoothly! A big thank you to Mark for his support, patience, friendliness and professionalism! Highly recommend Black Tie Events for your wedding!

How to really experience a wedding band/DJ before booking

Hi there. Can we come and listen to a band or DJ at another wedding or event before we decide to book?

That is really difficult at a private invitation only event. Find the years of experience on the dj website, if it's not there, don't bother. Also there should be more info on what other work they have done: Night Clubs, Hotels or even Radio experience. A dj who's been working 20, 30 or even 40 years just knows his stuff. A dj that knows and plays the last 5 years of RnB and Hip Hop isn't necessarily versatile enough to handle the unknown of very broad age groups, that might suddenly want to dance and knows with experience if that chosen song will keep people on the dancefloor or not at a wedding reception. Discuss music with a dj first. Ask them if you can supply a song list and does he take requests on the night. If he doesn't warm to that idea he probably won't be flexable enough to "work the room" satisfying some requests and keeping people on the dancefloor.
