Section 42 of the Marriage Act requires parties to an intended marriage give the celebrant at least one calendar month’s written notice prior to the solemnisation of the marriage. This notice is known as the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM).
It must be given to the celebrant no earlier than 18 months and no later than one calendar month before the date of the marriage.
Evidence of Date and Place of Birth – Acceptable documents:
· Official Birth Certificate
· Official Birth extract
Proof of Identity – Acceptable documents
· Australian or Overseas Passport or
· A Certificate of Australian Citizenship along with another form of photographic evidence
· Driver’s Licence
· Proof of age/photo card
· If either party is divorced or widowed original documents of evidence must also be sighted by the celebrant and therefore brought to the meeting when submitting the NOIM.
Yes, but you will need to obtain an interpreter through the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Ltd (NAATI). Your documentation may also require translation. The translated copies will be required to be submitted to the celebrant as well. There will be a cost which is incurred by yourself.
