Groomsmen play an important role beyond just the bucks night and suit shopping—they’re there to support the groom and help ensure everything runs smoothly. Here are a few meaningful ways they can contribute:

Before the Wedding:

  • Help with wedding logistics – Assist with tasks like setting up decorations, organising transport, or checking in with vendors.
  • Plan the bucks night responsibly – Make sure it suits the groom’s personality and doesn’t interfere with wedding plans.
  • Offer emotional support – Weddings can be stressful, so being there to listen and keep the groom relaxed is invaluable.
  • Assist with guest communication – Help answer questions about accommodation, transport, or the dress code.
  • Prepare a speech or toast – If they’re comfortable, a heartfelt speech or toast at the reception can be a great contribution.

On the Wedding Day:

  • Keep the groom calm and on schedule – Help him get dressed, remind him to eat, and make sure he arrives on time.
  • Hold the rings or important items – If there’s no ring bearer, a groomsman can keep them safe.
  • Coordinate with the celebrant or planner – Ensure the ceremony runs smoothly and everyone is where they need to be.
  • Help manage guests – Direct guests to their seats, answer questions, and keep an eye on the timeline.
  • Be the groom’s problem-solver – Handle any last-minute hiccups so the groom can focus on enjoying the day.

During the Reception:

  • Encourage guests to hit the dance floor – Help keep the energy up and make sure everyone is having a great time.
  • Assist with gifts and cards – Help collect and store gifts safely.
  • Be ready for any last-minute needs – Whether it’s fixing a boutonniere or fetching a drink, being attentive is always appreciated.

A great groomsman is someone who supports the groom, keeps the day stress-free, and helps make the wedding fun and memorable.

Groomsmen should be treated like the bridemaids. Especially in today's day and age, where fair is fair.

If there is a job you can't do, or need help doing for your wedding, good groomsmen will assist, much like goods bridemaids. These people are your friends and family, and for a day like the wedding, most will be more than happy to accommodate.  I'd suggest keeping it simple for bridal party members, as the more complex the request, the more challenging to please you it becomes.

Also, remember that different people approach things differently, so if you have a particular way of doing things, and ask someone else to do it for you, don't be too surprised if it's done to a different standard than your preferred standard.

I guess you need to remember, that most people are happy to help you plan, prepare and participate in yur wedding, ask for help, and it will come. Just be prepared with a cold slab for the groomsman that assists...or the bottle of Jack Daniels.

Hope this helps.

Hi there, what a great question!
It is traditional for the groom to organise the transport for the bride and bridal party, a great way to assist would be for the groomsmen to help in the arrangement of this detail with the groom.
