For Susie and Barry, marriage was not initially on the radar. Having both navigated long term marriages previously, they were content with a life already filled with travel, laughter, and a deep, natural companionship.
However, a surprise proposal during a quiet birthday dinner in Canada changed everything, proving that the most magical chapters can arrive in your mid 60s.
The couple chose to exchange vows on Australia’s Mornington Peninsula at Pier 10 Winery, a location chosen specifically so that Susie’s 92-year-old mother could be part of the celebration. This set the tone for a wedding defined by selflessness and a focus on what truly matters, with the couple even hosting a relaxed Greek feast at Alatonero the night before to ensure their 23 guests felt like one united family.
The wedding day arrived with perfect sunshine over the Shoreham countryside. In a moment Susie describes as her favourite of the day, her mother walked her down the grassy aisle toward Barry while tears flowed in a powerful testament to family and second chances. Celebrant Kate Mac crafted a ceremony that was as joyful as it was personal, moving seamlessly from emotional vows to a high-energy celebration.
Musicians from the day, including singer Charley, created a relaxed and romantic atmosphere on the lawn with songs like Songbird and Tenerife Sea as guests enjoyed freshly shucked oysters and cocktails overlooking the vines.
The reception was held inside the restaurant, which was reserved exclusively for the group to maintain an intimate and refined feel. Guests sat at one long, elegant table styled with ivory roses and soft greenery by Jo Laver Flowers, a design that encouraged deep conversation and connection.
The menu was a standout feature, including seasonal mains such as barramundi with miso butter and confit duck leg, followed by a magnificent two-tiered chocolate and coffee buttercream cake by Peninsula Cake Art. The quality and generosity of the food remained one of the most talked-about elements of the day for the guests.
The highlight of the evening for many was Susie and Barry’s surprise first dance to a routine they had secretly practised, complete with lifts and spins that left their guests delighted.
