What is TikTok and should I be using it?

If you’re reading this you could be forgiven for thinking that TikTok is just the sound a clock makes. Or a biscuit made by Arnotts. But TikTok is now a major player in the social media field and is an important platform to keep an eye on.

What exactly is TikTok?

TikTok is a social video platform designed for creating and sharing eye-catching short videos. It has a focus on comedy, talent, and lip-sync content and is already being used by brands such as Nike and The Washington Post.

The app has experienced massive growth in 2019. According to Influencer Marketing Hub, TikTok was cementing its place as one of the most popular social media platforms at the end of 2018, beating Pinterest, Snapchat, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Its popularity has continued to grow over 2019 and TikTok received more downloads in the first half of 2019 than Instagram, according to Sensor Tower.

What can businesses use TikTok for?

Like any other social media platform, businesses have started to use TikTok as a player in their marketing strategy. Utilising the video platform and short format they can create engaging short-form content to reach their target audience.

However, a key resource of TikTok and another of the reasons for its popularity is its editing features. The TikTok editor is easy to use and has a range of features and tools to create engaging video content. From slowing down or speeding up videos, music and effects, airbrush features and filters, TikTok is a great platform for editing videos for social media.

Should I be using TikTok for my business?

The big question is whether or not TikTok is worth it for businesses in the wedding industry in Australia.

At the moment, the primary TikTok audience is aged between 16 and 24. So unless you have another market that you’re targetting that isn’t engaged couples, it’s not a platform we recommend using for your marketing right now.

Until we know more about TikTok, how it’s growing and whether it’s here to stay, we would recommend sticking with Facebook and Instagram as the primary social media platforms for wedding businesses.

However, if you are doing more with your Instagram Stories the TikTok video editor could be a great way for you to play around with more video editing and create more engaging content.
