What to wear to a wedding in Vietnam

Vietnam is a dreamy choice for a destination wedding: think lantern-lit evenings in Hoi An, chic rooftop soirées in Saigon, and luxury beachfront vows in Da Nang. But if you’re heading to a wedding here, there’s one big question on everyone’s mind: What do I wear?

Vietnamese weddings blend tradition, elegance, and a whole lot of celebration. Whether you’re the couple tying the knot or a guest ready to dance the night away, here’s your guide to wedding fashion that feels right for the setting (and looks amazing in photos).

For the Bride

Vietnamese brides often wear the áo dài, a long, fitted silk tunic with flowing pants underneath. It’s chic, timeless, and perfect for a ceremony steeped in culture. Expect bold reds and golds for the tea ceremony: these colours symbolise luck and happiness.

But if you’re the bride planning a destination wedding, there’s zero pressure to wear áo dài for the whole day. Many brides opt for a white gown for the reception: think modern silhouettes, statement sleeves, or even a beaded slip dress if you’re going for coastal chic.

Pro Tip: If you want to nod to tradition without going full ceremonial, consider an áo dài-inspired second look: shorter hem, modern cut, or pastel hues for the reception. Bonus points if it matches the wedding’s overall vibe.

For the Groom

Vietnamese grooms traditionally wear an áo gấm, a brocade tunic often in blue, gold, or silver for the tea ceremony. It’s a sharp look that pairs beautifully with the bride’s áo dài.

For the reception, many grooms switch into a tailored suit: linen for beach weddings, velvet for cooler months up north, or a crisp tux for a luxe city event. Navy and grey are safe bets, but don’t be afraid of bold colours, as deep green or burgundy can seriously pop in photos.

Pro Tip: Vietnam is warm and humid, so breathable fabrics are your friend. Lightweight wool, cotton, or linen blends will keep you looking cool and feeling cool.

For the Guests

Most Vietnamese weddings have two parts: a traditional tea ceremony (often intimate and at the family home) and a larger reception (think hotel ballrooms, restaurants, or resorts). The reception is where you go full glam (but don’t show up in jeans and sneakers for either).

  • Women: Midi or maxi dresses in soft fabrics—silk, chiffon, or linen. Think polished but fun.

  • Men: Collared shirts and tailored trousers at minimum. Add a blazer for the reception (or skip it if it’s beachy).

Styling tips for a Vietnam wedding

When it comes to colour, there are a few rules to keep in mind for a Vietnamese wedding. White is reserved for the bride, so avoid wearing it altogether. Black is traditionally associated with mourning, so it’s not the best choice for a joyful celebration. And while red is a lucky colour in Vietnamese culture, it’s also a common choice for the bride’s áo dài during the tea ceremony, so steer clear of head‑to‑toe red. Instead, lean into bright, cheerful tones like blues, greens, pastels and florals. These shades feel festive without taking attention away from the couple.

Accessories should be practical as well as stylish. For shoes, block heels or wedges are perfect for women, especially if the venue has uneven ground, while loafers or dress shoes work well for men. Keep jewellery elegant and minimal: Vietnam’s heat and humidity can make heavy pieces feel uncomfortable. As for hair and makeup, humidity-proof everything. A good setting spray and anti-frizz products will be your best friends on the day.

Understanding local customs

Understanding local customs is part of being a thoughtful guest. Instead of a wrapped gift, it’s typical to give money in a red envelope. It’s also common for the bride—and sometimes the groom—to change outfits several times during the day, so don’t be surprised if there are multiple stunning looks. And prepare to be in plenty of photos; Vietnamese weddings love group shots, so dress knowing you’ll be captured from all angles.

Think before you pack for a Vietnam wedding

Before you pack, think practically. Lightweight fabrics, anti‑wrinkle spray, and even a backup outfit can save you from last‑minute stress. Because of the heat and humidity, breathable materials are key. Keep colour choices joyful and steer clear of white, black, and all‑red ensembles. Most importantly, choose something that’s polished but comfortable. You’ll be eating, dancing, and moving between spaces, so you want to look good and feel good all day.
